All HPs, Hayden least bad. Inouye lived long enough to see himself become an HP.

Curious as to what you mean by this -- I don't really understand how Inouye changed ideologically much at all during his time in Congress, especially if you compare him to some of the people on this very list (Byrd or Thurmond) who changed almost beyond recognition.

He very probably raped someone in the seventies.

Shame. He was a guy I had a lot of respect for. Sad

We got some from back when the Democratic Party was the racist party.

LOL, are you like 12 years old?

Anyway, probably Hayden.

What's wrong with Hayden?

He did what everyone credits Byrd for in WV in Arizona, and he did it without much drama.

one of whom fought bravely notwithstanding overt government discrimination against his ethnicity

you can't possibly be serious

I think he's talking about Inouye on that one.

God I hope so.
I would say the same about both...

White Southerners were not discriminated against during Civil Rights, if that's what you're getting at.

No, I know my history. The Democrats were the racist party until around the 1960's or so.

That's powerfully simplistic. Rule of thumb in political history, the more simple an answer seems, the less likely it is that it's actually an answer.

Kennedy > Hayden > Byrd >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Inouye > Thurmond

Kennedy is a sinner but he was one of the best Senators this country ever had. Hayden was a good man who did a lot for Arizona. Byrd had a bad past but he worked hard to overcome it and he gets that credit from me. So those are the good ones.

Inouye is a useless, corrupt rapist, and Thurmond was even worse because along with being useless, corrupt, and a rapist, Thurmond's politics were also historically and unbelievably awful.

What is everyone's issue with Inouye? Not a loaded question, just genuinely curious.

There are very few FF hawaii politicians as a lot of them tend to be pretty corrupt, and Inouye was the rule, not any sort of exception to it. He also has a history of harassing women and even raped a hairdresser.

Well shucks. Just knew him mainly from his wartime exploits. That's awful.

Why do people hate Hayden so much? From what I could gather on Wikipedia he didn't do anything particularly offensive, and he did a lot for the infrastructure of Arizona, which probably would be much smaller and less developed then it is. Is there something I'm missing?

Not to be too EDGY, but Inouye would have been an American hero had he not lived past the age of twenty.

How do you actually define "edginess"?

Considering what an abomination Arizona has grown to become, that might not be a point in his favor. Tongue

Saying cynical, incendiary, and/or misanthropic things mostly or solely to provoke a reaction or seem cool and disaffected, or in a way that has that effect unintentionally but in a way that a reasonably self-aware person should have been able to foresee.
