A new study finds 125 large lakes in the Arctic have vanished as temperatures rose over the past two decades. Many other lakes have shrunk.

The lakes once sat atop permanently frozen soil called permafrost. Other studies have shown permafrost is melting around the world, causing low-lying ground to slump and rock to fall from mountains.

"We think that climate warming is thawing the permafrost," said lead researcher Laurence Smith of the University of California, Los Angeles. "It's like pulling the plug out of a bathtub. There's nothing to prevent lake water from percolating through the soil to aquifers below."

Huh?  Where does it say that they think global warming doesn't exist?

Well it would say that if this was a report from Government Scientists once it made it past the Whiite House editing room (aka the remove facts & evidence that goes against the wishes of our oil buddies room) remember the whole debacle with the oil executive with no scientific experience who was Chief of Stance at a White House Enviromental Quality agency who edited & retracted reports against the wishes of Scientists)

One of the things I remember from geology class is that lakes are "ephemeral," for the most part.  You do see changes, as with the Great Salt Lake.  Prior to the last glaciation, the Great Lakes were not there.  See:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Wisconsin-glaciation

Why is this such a big issue, on the long term scale.

So you have found the 0.01% of climatologists that believe that global warming is a myth.

I will stick with what most scientists say.

Yes, global warming exists . . . because we are still exiting an ice age.  We haven't seen "hot" yet, in comparisson with historical records.

Read an article not too long ago by a scientist who was wondering if our efforts to curb green house gases are actually doing more harm than good to the Earth and her natural process.  Let me see if I can find it again.  Truly was an interesting theory.

hmmm, in the last Ice Age, temperatures were 5 C colder than they are today.  That was about 11,000 years ago, IIRC.  In the last 100 years the temperature has risen more than 1 C.  Meaning that in 10,900 it rose 4 C and then 1 C in 100 years.  The coming-out-of-an-ice-age theory doesn't hold water.

What's there to not believe? The 4 or 5 warmest years on record are all from the last 8 years or so.

Just to note, temperature does fluctuate naturally(not to say humans can't affect the process). We had a warm period back in the middle ages with temperatures somewhat like today's, if I'm not mistaken.

well, I certainly don't notice anything warmer.  I live in Michigan where it's 9 months of winter, so if global warming is actually proven to exist, I say bring it on, I could use some heat.
