RIP and BDE to a man who had influenced Israel in many ways. Was never a fan of his politics, but he is an important institution to Israel nonetheless.

I always enjoyed his quote on life: "Optimists and pessimists die the same way. They just live differently. I prefer to live as an optimist."

A complicated man; almost a stereotypical politician in so many ways but really not a natural one in others. Career only makes sense in the context of the weird cadre-like nature of the Mapai that o/c shaped him.

He named himself after a bird, you know. RIP.

His original name was Perski, which in Polish stands for "Persian".

It's true, he was also quite intellectual (though not formally educated in the mood of the socialist tradition back then) unlike Rabin who was crude and not so articulated (or Sharon who I think opened a single digit number of books in his life)

Another state leader who, despite having holes in his own education, could be easily described as an intellectual was Bülent Ecevit (didn't finish the university).

Yes, in certain respects he wasn't that far off 'if Nathan were a politician'.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Ideologically, I had my disagreements with him. Obviously, our reading of Jewish history is very different. But he was a man deserving of respect. Perhaps, the last Israeli (capital-"S") Statesman alive.
