If they remove Islam then they need to remove Judaism, Christianity and every other religion too.

I doubt they'll go through with it. This battle was lost before with the intelligent design movement, it'll be lost again now.

This is a patently stupid idea. Probably the dumbest thing I've heard in a few hours. It's a good thing this won't happen, but if it does, I'm not going to college in Tennessee.

I don't remember Islam being thought in my social studies classes in Minnesota. Maybe that it exists but not much more than that.

Why would this affect your college decision.  Colleges make up their own curriculum and you pick your degree path.

Dropping Islam a stupid thing to do, but I'd rather they have knowledge about some things than none.

I guess Islam was considered too controversial and so you just ignore that it exists?  Truth be told though, I don't know how much training teachers get in understanding various religions. The best thing for teaching religion would be to bring in leaders and scholars from the various traditions. But you can imagine that would upset both the fundamentalists and the "freedom from religion" crowd. More P.C. in education from both the right and the left. We can't expose children to anything that might expand their views of the world.

So much for 'teach the controversy', I guess?

Some small bumpkin town in TN should find a teacher willing to continue teaching it, charge 'em with breaking the law, and have a three ring circus/trial complete with noted populist orator Donald Drumpf.  It'll be a big boost to the economy.

I mean it's not like there's a ton of instruction into Islam in American public schools as is. I recall the lesson being basically "this is Muhammad, these are the five pillars, you pray this direction five times a day."

If they remove Islam then they need to remove Judaism, Christianity and every other religion too.

Do that religion should be taught in like a history of world cultures class. The only Required social studies courses should be US Government   , and US history . The rest should be optional to the student

Why is World History less important than US History?

People should learn the countries history they live in first . Plus US history relates to peoples lives and issues more if the stay here in the US

Explain what benefit students would get from learning about major world religions except the one that has the most direct impact on current world politics.

I strongly doubt they teach enough about Islam today for it to make a difference. I mean, how many proud TN citizens would be able to distinguish a sunni from a shia or would know what hajj is? I mean, if they taught anything serious about Judaism or Islam, there would be no idiotic cries of "sharia!" all over the country.

No surprise here, seeing as Islamaphobes already think they understand the religion better than actual Muslims or people who've studied it in depth.

More right-wing political correctness!  Sad!

This whole debate seems strange to me. Going through public junior and senior high in MN in the 1970's I had no exposure to any religion in social studies. Today in IL the social science standards make no mention of any specific religion nor religion in general. An individual school might for example take a field trip to a Hindu temple as part of a course on world culture, but that is not in the mandate of the state standards.

I remember that in social studies in 7th grade, we formed into four groups to make presentations to the class on Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. We could pick any religion but our own. I picked Islam (a religion I knew next to nothing about), but all but four of us in the class were Jewish, so the teacher moved me over to Judaism. So this particular Godless soul "taught" Judaism to a class full of Jews. Tongue The Jews (we didn't have any Muslims or Buddhists in the class) who presented Christianity annoyed me some, because it was all about Dante's Inferno and fallen angels and so forth, so the class thought it all absurd, and laughed uproariously. I raised my hand to object, but before I could say much, the teacher interjected to say, well, this is just Catholicism, and not about other branches of the religion. She thought that was the way out of the box, because nobody in the class was Catholic. I was not appeased, but whatever.
