Rank the following from most liberal to most conservative in NYC and its suburbs:  Irish, Italians, Jews, WASPs.

I suspect Italians are the most conservative in both the city and suburbs, while Jews would be the most liberal in the suburbs but WASPs the most liberal in the city.

With all the Orthodox and Russian Jews in NYC, I'd be surprised if they're more Democratic and liberal than the small WASP population, most of which is very secular and lives in Manhattan and gentrified parts of Brooklyn.  Secular Jews and WASPs I suspect probably vote pretty similarly in NYC itself.

^ In other words, the days of Upper West Side = Jewish = liberal and Upper East Side = WASP = Republican are over.

As an upper east side liberal Jew, your statement offends me.

You've also got to remember the WASPs are most likely to be super-rich and thus conservatives. I also think the conservative areas of Queens are the WASP-y areas. Also, Staten Island.

I agree that the secular/Orthodox divide is pretty huge.

Queens and Staten Island hardly have any WASPs at all.  Also the Orthodox vote is much more conservative than the "super rich" vote.

I'd guess it goes about 60/40 Democrat in NYC itself and obviously the secular-Orthodox split is evident, but with the right-wing side representing a large share than elsewhere.  Still Democratic, but quite a bit less so than among American Jewry as a whole.

In the suburbs though, though there are a lot of religious Jews in NJ and Long Island who are more conservative, it falls closer to the national average for Jewish voters in the US.

Come to think of it - with the large Orthodox populations in the Five Towns, Teaneck, Lakewood, Rockland etc. - 60/40 is probably reasonable for the suburban Jewish vote in NY/NJ as well.

In most of the US the bulk of Jews are 3rd or 4th generation and among the affiliated Reform is by far the largest movement.  In the New York area though there are a lot more immigrant Jews, Orthodox is probably the biggest movement and a much smaller percentage are Reform.
