Kaine, barely. Pence had better composure, but his lack of defense of Trump was telling. Nobody who wasn't going to vote for Trump already are going to change their mind, but undecideds still worried about Trump got nothing from Pence to reassure them of a Trump Presidency. Pence denied so many ACTUAL things that Trump has said on VIDEO, and that will be important in the days to come.  Kaine effectively defended women and minorities, especially in the final moments of the debate. Pence was smooth, but his persistent denials of things both he and Trump has said are going to be under scrutiny over the next few days. Small victory for the Clinton/Kaine ticket, if only because they kept it even.

Pence started off strong but in my mind really humiliated himself with not being able to defend Trump one. single. time. It was almost funny ~ If it weren't so scary.

IMO Kaine won the debate overall; pulling ahead in the second half strongly, just like Madame President!

I agree.  The fact that Mike Pence was unwilling and unable to defend his running mate over and over just proves that he is running for President in 2020.  He knows he will not be elected Vice President this year.

Actually, he may be running this year as well. For "and Tyler too".

Chuck Todd: Mike Pence won for Mike Pence, but that's not what this debate was about.

Surprisingly cogent analysis from Chuck

I have to say I'm really annoyed climate change wasn't mentioned at all.

When Mike Pence doesn't believe in evolution, it's a given that he doesn't accept mainstream science.  I'm disappointed it wasn't discussed either, but on the bright side, Pence didn't get a platform to repeat and spread complete falsehoods about the subject into the political discourse.  Climate change is a losing issue for the Republicans and the fossil fuel industry.
What is with the left and manufacturing opportunities to bash creationists?

YEC'S are irrational (OEC'S are another matter) - "well since the dating methods could be a few thousand years off we have to throw out everything proposed about evolution and the age of the earth."

Kaine did well on substance and the strategic role of ensuring that Pence could not endorse any specific position or statement of Trump, which is something that will be used for sure by Clinton and the surrogates going forward. But he was way too jumpy. But Kaine flattened him in the final third.

Despite the laughing and lies and furrowed brow, Pence came across as calm and reasonable. Which gives him the "win" by default. But I expect the fact-checkers will be out in force on him.

Kaine, by far. Everything that Pence said was a lie, and half of them were extremely obvious lies.

I know we're all supposed to be playing post-modern, post-truth, eternally-peering-behind-the-curtain pundits who are concerned with such critical details as Kaine's lame zingers or Pence's firm and masculine enunciation, but give me a f*cking break. Only a deplorable or a delusional human being could watch this and think that Pence did a better job of convincing us that his running mate is the right choice for our next president.

Well that's a surprise.

Anyways I guess it was a draw, tilt Kaine. A lot of people find out about the debate through clips online which will work in Kaine's favor.

This debate won't reverse the downward spiral for Trump, but I guess it'll slow the velocity of it.

Mike Pence won (although not in any sort of overwhelming fashion), mainly on style, and especially in the first half; he came off seeming much more presidential, calm, and leader-like than Kaine. However, Pence's refusal to do more than the bare minimum to defend Trump means that by no means was Trump the winner or helped even remotely here.

A Pyrrhic win. Pence helps himself for 2020 while Trump is left to dangle in the wind

So the Pence won, Trump lost idea.

Pence, and considering both presidential nominees are old, it might make a difference.

I voted draw.  Pence won on style, Kaine on content, and it won't move the needle noticeably.

I'll say it was a draw. Pence did seem more relaxed, though Kaine did talk him into a corner a few times. It won't make much of a difference.

Mike Pence. It wasn't even close. Tim Kaine wouldn't shut the hell up and proved that he and Crooked Hillary Clinton are not able.

Technically speaking, Pence won.  But as horrid as Tim Kaine was, he managed to keep the debate squarely focused on the question of the Trump's viability as President.  Pence spent the night defending Trump, Kaine spent the night breaking him down.  It doesn't matter that Kaine scored very few rhetorical points.  A debate on Trump's plausibility is a debate the Trump campaign can ill afford.

Tactical Pence victory.  Strategic Kaine victory.
