Has President to be Clinton, or Trump for that matter, been asked whether as President they would support efforts to change the meaning of Columbus day like in Vermont, where it is now a day in honor of indigenous people?  Since its Columbus day today, its a topic worthy of discussion.

If she plans to abolish the holiday entirely and make Election Day a federal holiday/day off work or school.

Native American Day would be better.

Or the Day we Vanquished the Orange Menace.

I support this whole-heartedly. In Puerto Rico, Election Day is a holiday.

It'd give the American people a day off in the lead up to Thanksgiving (which also makes an extra opportunity for Thanksgiving preparation/Christmas shopping), increases turnout and the ability of the candidates to reach more people in last minute advertising/appearances. It's accomplish more than "Native American Day."

That would be devastating to tourism in New England. I would support renaming Columbus day, AND making Election Day a holiday.

I'm not from nor have I ever been to New England, but what about Colombus Day attracts tourists? Is it an easy day trip for New Yorkers or something?

It's usually a long weekend up here. I have a four day weekend, so it's a mini vacation for a lot of people.

Ever see the Family Guy episode when the tourists come to stare at the leaves change colour?

As an Italian, I have no idea in God's name why they chose this day as an Italian celebration day.  It's named after a rapist and a mass murderer.  Get rid of the holiday and announce a day to celebrate Native Americans.

Awful terrible idea.  So have election day on the busiest travel day of the year when everyone is scrambling to get out of their jurisdiction to visit extended family...

Literally nobody ever travels on Colombus Day down here. We don't view it as anything more than a little printed sentence with a small picture stamped onto the calendar.

We should call it discovery day. That's a day no one (hopefully) will oppose.

Nah. It'll make the Scandanavians in MN and the Dakotas angry about not recognizing Leif Ericson.
