In the sense that the "Clown Car" of 2012 was dominated by the Tea Party or"crazy" types, while the Establishment candidate (Romney) was the front-runner all along and the eventual nominee. Contrast that to 2016, where the dynamic seemed to be the other way around....

-Looks like Trump took the vast majority of Gingrich's base, and a good bit of Mitt's and Rick's.

The 2008 primaries are a better comparison with 2016. Trump took a good deal of McCain's base, Romney voters were the most likely #NeverTrump voters, and all Huckabee voters voted Trump or Cruz (in WI, Trump, in IA, Cruz) and Trump in the general.

The 2016 GOP primaries will probably be considered an oddball among historians 50 years from now.

-Nah.

Right, because we're going to have 50 years more of politicians talking about their genitals during debates.
