And here's Italy.

As for me:

I'm rather torn up between Calabria (ancestry), Trentino (best weather and ecological landscape, and thus most likely to spite Goldwater), Tuscany (most like California), and Umbria (like Tuscany, but less traveled by).

I might have to chose by pity vote.

Toscana. North-Central Italy is absolutely gorgeous.

I have to betray my (split far-Northern and far-Southern) roots here.

Sicily. Italian+Arab+Spanish+Norman is such a fascinating cultural stew.

Veneto

Venice is one of the most fascinating cities I have visited. When walking its streets it felt medieval more than any other city I've been in, yet was fully modern in amenities. It's one of the few where I have altered travel plans to stay longer.

I see that my hand has been forced to Umbria, the only landlocked Region on the peninsula.

Hard to find a more charming place than Assisi.

Calabria would be my second choice

Have you been there? What part exactly?

My dad grew up slightly east of Reggio, and while I'm sentimentally attached to that area, it has a LOT of problems. Sila and Aspromonte are great though.

TAA, VdA, Piemonte and Lombaria would be happy to know that. Tongue

Those aren't on the Peninsula, too far north to be so.

This is a real tough choice.

I've been to Veneto, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Calabria and Sicily.

I have a soft spot for Sicily since it is not only (along with Campania) the home of my ancestors, but because it is so beautiful and interesting.

Really it's just a matter of ancestral bias, I found everywhere I went in Italy to be captivating.

I accidentally voted Tuscany, by the way Tongue

No, I've never been to Europe at all. My Great-Grandfather was born in Campania, but that's too urban and touristy for me. I like all the Southern Italian mainland regions. I don't have a favourite place in Calabria.

In Basilicata it would be Potenza. I read a great book once that was set there called Christ Stopped at Eboli by Carlo Levi. It was by a political opponent of Mussolini and they exiled him there in the 1930's.
