If the poets who publish on paper are awarded I see no reason why a poet-singer shouldn't.

^

In this vein I would have gone with Leonard Cohen, but FF choice regardless.

Also, congrats ChairmanSanchez.

This is absurd, of course, although it's funny to see the bookmakers who put out 50/1 odds on Dylan every year to take money from credulous hippies get their comeuppance.

Imagine a singer from outside the West winning this award. You can't.

Isn't that just a problem with the Nobels in general rather than this specific award?

Often at least there's an effort made, which is why Ngugi was the favorite.

We should be able to. Plenty are deserving. There's nothing about the act of singing or of being a singer that makes this 'absurd', even if Dylan specifically isn't as titanically lyrically talented over against other singers as this award would lead one to believe.

Ngugi would have been a great choice.

Is there any particular Eastern poet or for that matter, any other poet period, out there who has made otherwise nonsensical phrases into metaphors for things that can't even really be seen or described to begin with? Who else can paint a portrait of an entire world with only a sentence? Look at the timeline of "Tangled Up In Blue" for instance. It is entirely vague in terms of the plot, and yet, every other interpretation of it that I have heard seems as likely to be correct as the others or my own. There is none. Dylan was telling his story. But it is written so as if we can tell ours in the exact same words.

This quote from the liner notes on Blood On The Tracks really stood out to me when I first read it about a year ago when I bought the album on vinyl and saw the full text. It doesn't get thrown around regarding Dylan, which is odd to me because it seems to be as direct a mission statement from him as we'll ever get:

"Totalitarian art tells us what to fee;; Dylan arts feels, and invites us to join him"-Pete Hamill

This was a backhanded way of letting Philip Roth know he will never be a Nobel laureate.

I might be 'too French' but well Bob Dylan just doesn't strike me as 'literature'.

That being said, make an 'Art Nobel Prize' and everybody's happy.

In case anybody can still clearly state the meaning of Nobel prizes anyhow.

Dario Fo got one, so they have already broken with a traditionel concept of literature once. Fo died the same day Dylan got the price btw.

I love how Dylan is skipping the ceremony (he's busy) and might just ignore the "Nobel lecture" and the prize all together (legally forfeiting it). He's left all the bourgeoisie hand-wringing academics in a panic, but I think this is all the more reason for him to get the prize: only a mind like his can write lyrics like his.

I'm annoyed with Dylan's attitude. The Nobel Committee, by awarding him, made an important break.

He didn't ask for the reward, nor does he need their validation. If they thought he was this great, they'd have given it to him in 1975. Frankly, I think the Emperor Committee has no clothes at this point. Dylan is not going to be a pawn in their effort to show how hip they are.
