Just heard on France Inter that CETA is over, Wallonia managed to fully block it, so then it can be said...Yay Wallons!

As for the debate Mr Magnette, fancy name, quite well displayed the main relevant points at work, the international court, and the quality standards.

The Canadian emissary in charge of negociating would have left, crying ^^, saying that EU showed as totally incompetent at negociating for trade agreements, relevant as well. ^^

Good to see this treaty dead (for now). And TTIP with it.

If anything, Americans and Canadians should adopt our strict standards and not we the crappy American ones ...

And if the Wallons didn't block it, it would likely have been blocked by a President VdB or Hofer early next year.

The Dutch organization Forum voor Democratie, which took part in the successful campaign to organize a referendum on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, has launched a campaign for a referendum on CETA. Let's pray the Dutch will be sane enough not to stand in the way of this beautiful Freedom Treaty.

Yes, one has to appreciate how the Dutch, a country whose economy is literally a series of ports for trade coming to and from other countries, has turned against free trade.

It's 2016 though Sad

Tragic. Only gives further ammunition to the Brexiteers. The problem with the EU is that it needs less democracy to stop this sort of stupidity but more democracy to satisfy voters.

Thats an ... Interesting interpretation

Yes. The EU needs more trade deals but fewer alienating mandates passed down by civil servants. This is essentially contradictory. Seriously, though, what is the point of the Common Market if you cannot have free trade with anyone else? Canada is as uncontroversial a market as you can possibly get. This essentially imposes a zero-sum choice on its members: "you can either have free trade exclusively within the Common Market or free trade exclusively outside of it".

The smart compromise would be for the EU to form a Bundesrat like chamber elected from national legislatures, which would be asked to reach a consensus as a body; rather than dicking around with every single parliament.

France Inter: Canada and EU set an ultimatum for Wallonia to surrender tomorrow in order to sign on 27th, who knows what gonna be the sanction of the 'ultimatum', if any.

That gonna turn into a brilliant running gag, 'lol Europe'.

Let's hope the Walloons will heel really soon. The EU should simply threaten to cut the funds they receive for being an underdeveloped wasteland.

1 word out of 10 on average there.

Overall most of former Francophone 'Black Africa', and well Québec would certainly sooo enjoy such an initiative as well.

Ha ha ha, the EU is such a joke. Imagine if the state legislature of Idaho was able to torpedo an international treaty/trade deal?

The irony of the complaining about the lack of transparency is that the agreement has been published online but the anti-CETA/TTIP crowd still can't seem to let anyone know what exactly it is they have a problem with or what their compromise solutions are.

If the European Union wants to continue its 40 years of stagnant living standards relative to the U.S. and Canada, then that's their right, I s'pose.

Yeah, would be fancy, wouldn't it?

The regional aspect is interesting though, and who knows, eventually relevant, maybe just like the link below:

    https://www.collectifstoptafta.org/collectivites/

Shows how the big majority of French elected regional councils oppose TAFTA, how a big enpugh deal of French départemental councils do as well, and then all French communes that claim to be 'OUT OF TAFTA', there is a big red very official sign at the gates of one right next to mine, it's not unpleasant.

The problem amongst most people opposing it is well known now, and if 'a crowd' can't really have a voice, Mr Magnette pretty much posed the problems, 2 main aspects being some dark/unspecified aspects of the international court that gonna rule it, and the fact that it would de facto losen quality standards where they are higher, besides a few protected ones.

That CETA thing seems to have become less evil thn the total evil TAFTA/TTIP one, but still, up to cirizens to tell what they wanne make of it, isn't it?

Oh come on Mr. AfD sympathiser (lol), i was pulling your leg.

On the subject of CETA-TTIP, my old commune in Brussels, Saint-Gilles declared itself an anti-free trade zone before it was cool. Take that Wallonia!

It remains to be seen if Austria's Parliament ratifies CETA before the New Year or not.

If they do it before New Year, it will likely be ratified.

But if they are not doing it, there's a chance CETA will still be blocked because it needs the signature of the President and if Hofer wins on Dec. 4 he won't sign it (VdB is opposed to CETA as well, but he'll likely sign it anyway).
