HARTFORD, Conn. — A judge on Friday dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit by Newtown families against the maker of the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, saying federal law shields gun manufacturers from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products.

State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis granted a motion by Remington Arms to strike the lawsuit by the families of nine children and adults killed and a teacher who survived the attack on Dec. 14, 2012. A gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators at the school with a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by Remington.

Correct decision, unless we also want to sue Stanley for murders committed with their axes.

Yeah, probably. I get the argument to be made for suing gun manufacturers, but it's counter-intuitive and only further polarizes people on the issue of gun control.

Correct decision for sure. I don't see how even anti gun people would think the manufacturer bears any responsibility.

Yeah, correct decision. The cigarette makers were liable because they lied about their products. The standard set by this case would have opened up auto makers to lawsuits every time a nutcase drove drunk.

Great Decision! This one I never could get, it's not the manufactures fault for making something. They are trying to make a living.

To me, this is kind of like the vote recently to allow 9/11 citizens to sue the Saudi govt. I don't agree with that either.

Just doesn't make a lot of sense.

People are angry and throw reason under the bus in the name of revenge. It's quite typical, if highly counterproductive. I'm glad to know that cooler heads prevailed in this case.

Good decision, let's stop blaming weapons, and start blaming the people responsible.
