Open trade is HP, open borders is FF. Mixed, voted HP. Though it's telling that this is the worst thing in her speeches.

Voted HP (R), because open borders = really the worst. Free trade is good, but it should facilitate the well-being of the nation -- it is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

I'm generally supportive of open borders, but not fully open trade. I only support fully open trade agreements with similar economies, such as Canada, the UK, and pretty much all of Western Europe. I'd support a US-Japan FTA, but I think it'd be the Japanese that would have more objections on account of what they do to their automotive market.

Bad!  Open boarders with Canada would be good.  Everyone else, no.

It depends, not all single markets are created equal.

If it is one based on strong worker rights, consumer protections and protection from corporate excesses, then FF.

If it is a TTIP style deal that hands power over to multinationals, and allows them to do things like sue governments for "lost profits" then obviously HP.

Permissive immigration policies are more likely to result in migrants drowning at sea than restrictive ones.

...

Is this a joke post? Considering what the title of this thread is? Like, obviously any idiot could have predicted what would happen if one says "oh btw all refugees can stay in germany if they make it here in person, oh and also we're going to keep the land border closed". I did. But ... it's not really relevant to shrillaries comments you see.

(also, should point out I was using "drown" metaphorically, I wasn't literally talking about drowning.)

Are the poor people (however defined) of, say, Australia really worse off than the poor people of, say, Greece?

I agree, although it arguably doesn't count as 'open trade' under those circumstances.

Which is exactly why open trade is a bad idea. It is inherently against such ideas since that "disrupts".

Same way lasseiz-faire/"free-market" capitalism is a farce.

Not a huge fan, at least in the near term. As an economist, I feel most other economists have completely abdicated responsible judgment on this issue in favor of easy math and easy answers.

HI (D).

Open borders AND free trade are both invitations by the state for private interests to exploit their citizens to the lowest common denominator. To open up trade and free movment between countries to areas with lower wages and fewer regulations is to initiate a race to the bottom with both wages and regulations.

Note that permanent immigration is fine from areas with lower wages; within a nation those new citizens can organize and demand wages and protections commensurate with their new countryfolk. So I'm in favor of closed borders with very lenient immigration policies.

FF (D) so long as workers from each country are to be paid a livable wage as determined by cost of living in their areas.
