Here's the scenario:

1) - Republicans do not shut down the federal government in 1995, staying pretty popular with the public.

2) - The GOP nominates a popular midwestern Governor - Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin and former Governor (and former Education Sec.) Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

Without the Government shut down Clinton can not so easily tie the unpopular Gingirch to Thompson.

I really don't know. Depends on how well Thompson could have attacked Whitewater, Travelgate, Nannygate, McDougalgate, etc.

Uhm do I really have to say who I'd vote for? Home state hero would have a hard time winning but could easily win Wisconsin.

I'd still say Clinton'd win by a landslide.

Hi MasterJedi! Smiley

He still has a good chance to win but not in a landslide. Thompson makes all of the upper midwest very likely to switch to the Republican side.

I think this is a fairly reasonable map...

Clinton - 312
Thompson - 226

Not to say I think Thompson would be guarenteed to lose. I think Ohio and Pennsylvania could swing his way.

Not sure about that. I still think states like Minnesota and Michigan would have a comfortable lean to Clinton. Possibly tossups though.
