The next US census is in 2020. As far as I know, the last one in 2010 was in April of that year. So if the next census is sometime in the spring of 2020, why aren’t the electoral college numbers not updated for the November election? Actually, I guess, there would be enough time for doing that. Why do we have to wait until 2024?

The numbers don't come out until after the election. Also, some congressional primaries happen before the census.

For the record, the new districts come into effect during the 2022 midterms.

The Census is conducted on April 1, 2020 and they then spend the next few months checking and crosschecking the data. Federal law requires the Census to release the reapportionment before the end of the year, and it usually comes out in the last week or two. The Census then has until March 30, 2021 to release all the redistricting data, which is different than the reapportionment data. Reapportionment includes military and other government personnel stationed overseas but redistricting data does not.
