I plan to stand as a local councillor in 2007 as long as I can raise the small amount of money needed. I'm standing  as an Independent (Libertarian, not that anyone here knows what that is) So I have 2 more years to build up my profile! Luckily i'm building a reputation as a local activist. Scotland is introducing a proportional representation list system for all councillors. It is likely my town will therefore elect 4-5 councillors as a result. If its a success...the Scottish Parliament beckons in 2011 when I will be a sprightly 27 years old!

Good luck Smiley
Most independent councillers are crooked old farts who've held onto their ward since about 1832, so you'd make quite a difference Wink

I hope to be a candidate in a Council election at some point... not entirely sure *where* yet because I'm not too sure where I'll be living when I do (I'm pretty certain it'll be somewhere in Yorkshire, just not sure where yet).

It seems many of us hold dreams of local public office. 'We all want to change the ward' as the Beatles didn't sing! Wink

Did that actually go through in the end? Anybody got a link to something about it?

Good luck, btw.

Yes it went through. The coalition partners teh Lib Dems pressed for it and won. Labourwon 92% of the wards in my council despite having 30 something % of the vote. The change is long over due.

I'd forgotten about this thread Smiley

I ran for office in May 2007 as a Conservative candidate for the Hamilton North and East ward in my local council. (Shortly after I made this topic the party began it's transformation into something closer to my own ideal) It was a race conducted under proportional representation. I wasn't expected to win and I didn't Smiley But I performed above expectations and placed 4th (The top 3 candidates got elected), polled higher than some candidates who won in other wards (due to the effects of PR) and thoroughly enjoyed myself which was the main thing.

I got to meet people and talk with them. I took the opportunity to visit those who never meet their candidates, in some of the poorest areas, because they are deemed to be people who won't vote, or will only vote one way. I took time, as a fresh face to put forward 'social justice conservatism' and I was given a great degree of freedom by the party to do so, as well as discussing local issues like tax, road traffic and housing issues. I also got cups of tea from grannies Cheesy So I was well looked after.

I hope to run again in 2011, possibly at a higher level.

Good job! Just remember to keep trying, who knows what can happen!  I ran for office in 2005, and  2007, and I lost by about 250 votes or so. I worked hard, and was rewarded with the title of Commissioner on the Human Relations Commission.  Hard work pays off my friend!

I was a local councillor (Council Member), the elected assessor (which is less impressive that it sounds and was abolished in 2007) and a member of my school authority (school board member).

They are fun to do.

By all means keep at it. I lost at my first run for city council, but won at the next election.
