Although the term "populist" is more of an antonym to "elitist" than to "libertarian," there is some precedence to using it as shorthand for "economically liberal and socially conservative." David Nolan used it for that quadrant of his original Nolan Chart, and he no doubt based that on historical usage in the United States, where the People's (Populist) Party once put forth clearly economically liberal and socially conservative candidates like Thomas E. Watson and William Jennings Bryan.
