Ohio and Indiana are voting closer together now than they are Kentucky or Pennsylvania.

It almost feels like every poll from a red state is half the margin it was from 2012 - and in some cases, even more, like Texas. In what red state is Trump actually outperforming Romney?

This is where most of that 7-8% lead is at...Red states and places like Texas. All while states in the northeast and midwest are closer like Maine, Ohio and Iowa.

Ohio was close in 2012 - Obama won it by 3. Hillary is meeting or exceeding Obama in NY and CA; FL and NC; VA and CO. Probably MI and perhaps WI.

The cliche Atlas answer would likely be West Virginia, since for some reason this forum has a fetish with this state and loves to bash on it regardless of party affiliation....

Idk if Trump will actually outperform Romney in WV....  he's not a particularly religiously pious man, nor does he necessarily have a ton of street cred in terms of military service or national security issues.

Demographics certainly look favorable for Trump in an increasingly aging state that is heavily Anglo White, people own guns to hunt, go to church much more frequently than the national average, and feel abandoned by both political parties on economic issues.

Other than WV or possibly OK, I'm having a hard time seeing a state where Trump will outperform Romney in terms of a total % of the Republican vote....

There might be a few other states where there is a chance that he could outperform 2012 Romney margins (WY?), but still not really seeing that scenario unless suddenly the trajectory of the race starts breaking for Trump.

Atlas always says that VP choices don't matter, but I really think that, without Pence, Indiana would be a tossup right now, and I don't think Clinton would've dominated Virginia as much as she has if she hadn't picked Kaine.

They add a couple points in their home state, yeah, but any idea that they have some amazing impact across the whole country is just silly.

I still would not be surprised to see IN only vote Trump by 2-4% margins come election day.

Pence has helped bring some of the evangelicals around in this state, but still many of them aren't too crazy about his running mate at the top of the ticket.

Please, are you still going on about your ridiculous view that Democrats should be pro-coal simply to appeal to West Virginians?

Yeah, it's sad how anti-coal Atlas Dems are.

The miners were liberal on economic issues but conservative on social issues. The weakening of the once-powerful UMW corresponds with the decline of the Democratic Party in West Virginia. Also worth noting: when The Democrats dominated West Virginia politics they underinvested in highways, public health, and education.

The coal mines got worked out, and the mining barons became almost as powerful as the mining barons of a century ago (think of "Sixteen Tons").

The Republicans seem to be looking for low-skill, low-wage jobs difficult to unionize... so long as they get power they would be delighted to make West Virginia a Third World region within the United States (as is southeastern Kentucky).

Ohio and Indiana are voting closer together now than they are Kentucky or Pennsylvania.

Indiana is simply more rural than Ohio, Michigan, or Wisconsin. Indianapolis, Hammond, Gary, and South Bend are heavily Democratic.

Rural parts of Indiana are no more Republican than their counterparts in much-more-Democratic Illinois, Michigan, or Wisconsin. But the rural population of Indiana is proportionally much larger. That is the difference.

He can’t even close the deal in his running mate’s home state. Sad!

Given how poorly Pence is regarded here, I would think Trump's constant contradictions of the governor would help him.
