I'm a guy who likes to look ahead.

I'd like to know what you're dream matchup would be in 2012 and the matchup you think is most likely to happen in 2012. (Assume the winner of 2008 has equal chance as the other candidates)

Dream match-up:

Democratic Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (by this time, he will have won and served a second term as governor) vs. Republican Pennslvania Sen. Rick Santorum (assuming he survives the 2006 election, and wins a third term over Bob Casey Jr.).

Realistic match-up:

incumbent President Hillary Clinton (assuming she receives the nomination of the Democratic Party in the 2008 election, and triumphs over Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee) vs. two-term Virginia Sen. George Allen.

Dream - President Rick Santorum vs. Senator Dick Durbin

Realistic* - President George Allen vs. former Governor Bill Richardson

* While I believe a President Santorum is realistic by 2012, I believe a President Allen is more likely.

Kinda surprised at all the predictions for Blagojevich.  I know this was years before his scandal, but was he really seen as Presidential material back then?!!

1) What does this thread have to do with election trends?
2) Really scary to see how many people were salivating for a Santorum presidency back in 2005. I guess people weren't aware of how deeply he hated gays back then. Perhaps people then saw him as a moderate, while in fact he's the most extreme of all the severe conservatives out there. All the predictions for George Allen, Mark Sanford, Blagojevich and John Edwards are quite hilarious as well looking back now, having the actual turn of historical events in mind.

I agree. Some of those predictions are quite ironic. It seems that a lot of posters from 2005 felt that the Republicans would win in 2008 with either Rick Santorum, George Allen, Mitt Romney, Tommy Thompson, Bill Frist or even Mark Sanford.

All those predictions for George Allen and Bill Frist. If you asked the average American citizen about those names today, I doubt that many would recognize them.

At the time, Bush's approval ratings were not as bad as they were in 2008, so I guess people thought that George Allen would be reelected in 2006 and that Bill Frist would run for another term in the Senate, thus positioning themselves as strong front-runners for the 2008 Republican nomination.
