Definitely a mixed bag, at least from a progressive standpoint.

Tilt FF, but definitely not one of the better Democrats from the state.

Smith was a great American, a true reformer, a friend to the common man and an enemy to the plutocrats; he should have been the first Catholic president.

FF overall.

He should have been grateful that he lost, rather than be blamed for the Great Depression.

FF. Of the Democratic tickets that era(1912-1940), he's the second best person ideologically(second only to Charles W. Bryan) and probably the best personally.

His reputation's been tarnished by his later opposition to the New Deal, which didn't come from an actual philosophical difference (as FDR said: "what's his problem? We're doing exactly the same thing he was doing as Governor") but bitterness following losing the 1932 nomination.

That being said, Smith was a forerunner of the New Deal coalition. FF.

He laid the foundation for it, which imo overrules his later posturing.

I get that you love tarring anyone with any brush you can find, but opposing the New Deal on personal grounds, while scummy, was not by-and-large a fascist thing. And the business plot, assuming that's what you're talking about, was complete fabrication.

BRTD jumped the shark again. There are no links between Smith and "Business Plot" morons.

Al Smith would've been a good choice in 1928, but became considerably worse afterwards

Neutral.  I almost wish he had won in 1928 so that he could have been president when the stock market crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression started.  If he had, then Republicans would be the dominant party now.
