October 10, 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned from office.

President Richard Nixon names Gerald Ford as Vice President, effective December 6, 1973.

August 9, 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned from office.

Vice President Gerald Ford becomes President.

Let us suppose that Vice President Spiro Agnew had committed no crime, and therefore did not have to resign the Vice Presidency.

Agnew therefore becomes President, and the Vice Presidency therefore becomes vacant.

Given this scenario, who does President Agnew name as Vice President?

More likely Agnew's crimes remained unreported rather than uncommitted, but the effect is the same politically. The most likely possibilities are Ford and Rockefeller.

What about Kansas Senator Bob Dole?

Due to his close association with Nixon Dole would be an unlikely choice. He was still a surprising pick for Ford in 1976, after getting narrowly reelected two years before. Insiders were placing bets on Howard Baker and I think Baker would be a good pick for Agnew too.

He'll have to pick an acceptable VP, with an even more hostile congress. 'Hatchet Man' Dole won't fufill that role, but Bush or even Ford could.

Yes, I like Baker and Bush in this situation.

Agnew would want to avoid anyone allied too closely with Nixon, such as John Connally.

Not to mention Connally had an ethical problem, which was one of the reason Nixon decided against picking him to replace Agnew, despite prefeering him the most.

John Conally. He needs a more liberal guy and Rocky is a too strong personality who would overshadow the president.

True Federalist brings forward an extremely interesting scenario

This could have happened

President Nixon resigns as President

Vice President Agnew becomes President

President Agnew picks, let us say, Baker for Vice President

President Agnew's crimes while Governor of Maryland become known

President Agnew resigns

Vice President Baker becomes President

President Baker picks, let us say, H W Bush for Vice President

Three Presidents in three months

Three Vice Presidents in three months

Baker is an honorable man, and I'm not sure if there was a hint of scandal he would accept Agnew's offer. I'm more inclined to go with your original idea.

There's no way Agnew of all people would pick peacenick Hatfield.
Agnew was exactly the type of guy to think of "balancing" a ticket like that.
