https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/10/23/donald-trumps-campaign-manager-admits-we-are-behind/

[quote]"We are behind," Conway said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Clinton, she said, "has some advantages, like $66 million in ad buys just in the month of September, thereby doubling her ad buys from August. Now, most of those ads are negative against Donald Trump — classic politics of personal destruction, cesspool kind of ads. And she has tremendous advantages: She has a former president, who happens to be her husband, campaigning for her. The current president and first lady, vice president, all much more popular than she can hope to be."

But Conway is still hopeful that Trump can be victorious by winning over undecided voters who don't like Clinton. Instead of pointing to polls, which Trump has said are rigged against him, Conway pointed to the enthusiasm that she seen on the campaign trail.

On "Fox News Sunday," Conway said Trump is focused on winning Florida, Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina and, possibly, Nevada, while protecting Arizona and Georgia, which are traditionally Republican states but have seen bursts of support for Clinton in polls.

Trumplespeak is truly the most evolved form of doublespeak.

"We're ahead!"
"We're behind but can win!"
"It's rigged and doesn't matter!"

Allll at the same time.

Huh, even if he wins those 4-5 states he is focused on winning he still loses. Kellyanne is going to look haggard and sad on November 8th...I hope they call the race in the middle of her giving an interview.

"possibly Nevada"

Looks like even the Trump campaign knows that NV is Titanium D. Also, if they're mentioning AZ and GA, but not CO/PA/WI, you know they're headed for a crushing defeat.

I'll bet she wakes up on Nov. 9 with a feeling like she's been paroled from prison.  Or with a tremendous hangover.  Or both.

Kellyanne knows very well that the campaign is on a death march.  She just wants to land the plane as smoothly as possible.

You're searching for meaning where their is none. It's political glossolalia. And has always been.

Truman won this way in 1948, it's never over until every vote has been counted.

This is of course true, and is a good reminder why no side should ever be overconfident.  But 1948 is not really comparable.  Polling then was much scarcer and not as representative as it is today.  But even with that, Truman's deficit in the polls was much less than Trump's is today.

Trump is in the position of a football team that's down by two touchdowns with 2 minutes to play and the ball on their own 20.  Is it possible to come back from such a deficit?  Sure, it's happened.  That's why the side that's down shouldn't give up hope, and the side that's ahead shouldn't assume it's over until the final gun sounds.  But is such a comeback likely?  No, not at all.

Haha. You really should read some analysis on the difference between the election of '48 and the current one. This is one of those go-to fantasies Trump sheep cling to as a crutch as they hobble their way to feigned optimism. Similar to big rallies = votes and the shy Trump voter theory.

Trump is certainly no Harry Truman (thus, why I  think Trump will lose), but I could buy some level of arguement for comparing Clinton to Thomas Dewey - ran for President several times, despite each campaign having seemingly little purpose or direction in the public eye. Both were solid debaters - Dewey's "you can't kill an idea with a gun" quite literally killed Harold Stassen's career forever, and Clinton demolished Trump every time they met.

Trump, meanwhile is determined to leave as big a crater as possible.

Either that, or he's under the impression that getting to the ground faster means a safer landing. Honestly not sure which.

Correct.  And Trump is the one person who can inspire people who have never voted before and are not counted in polls.  People who like straight talk.  So far all he's done is win just about everywhere.  His primary victories in the northeast, where he won every single county, were historic.

So vast numbers of unrepresented voters are going to make up for his deficit among women, Hispanics, African Americans, Republicans, Independents, etc? Where's the evidence of this?

Certainly not in the primaries, where Trump actually underperformed his polling average.

There is not strong evidence that Trump has prompted a surge in voter registrations or participation by non-regular Presidential voters.  To the extent he drove turnout among new Primary voters, they were overwhelmingly already voting in Presidential Generals.  IIRC, the proportion of Trump voters who were new registrants was about the same as Clinton voters who were, and less than the proportion of Sanders voters who were.

Also, it's not like new registrants are never counted in polls.  Likely voter screens often ding them for that (rightfully so!), but depending on what other questions they ask (such as certainty to vote/"do you have a plan to vote?" stuff), they can pass a screen.  But, again, there is no evidence that Trump can safely depend on these voters, and a lot of them come from Clinton-leaning demographics anyway.

It's also worth noting, as Speed of Sound said above, Trump tended to slightly underperform his final polls in the primaries.
