Let's say Hillary wins.

Who replaces Kaine in the Senate?

I believe in Virginia that first the governor would appoint a temporary replacement, then there would be a special election.
1. Who would be the appointee
2. Who would be the likely nominees and the likely winner in the special election?

Among the Republican candidates, maybe Eric Cantor.

Supposedly McAuliffe wants to appoint Bobby Scott, who would imo be a terrible choice. He's old and hasn't faced a challenging election in over 20 years. If he wants a minority he should go with Jennifer McClellan.

Interesting question; would Cuccinelli come out of retirement? Does Corey Stewart drop out of the gubernatorial election to run here? How bad would Stewart lose? Is it possible that Senator Deeds would get involved? I'm more curious about how this turns out than how the presidential race turns out.

Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott. He's probably going to be appointed. He'd be the first African American senator. He's a African American. Check. I don't know if he can hold on to the seat, though. He could help the Virginia Democratic ticket especially if Ralph Northam is the 2017 Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee. Northam, I don't think could appeal to black voters.

Bobby Scott.  In a state with so many blacks, they deserve representation after so many years.  It would be horribly racist to pass up a qualified African American politician for this role.

Dream? Tom Periello or Rick Boucher.

Would love to see Rep. Bobby Scott though!

How about Louise Lucas or Kenney Alexander?

Bobby is next in line.  They could run for his house seat.

Would Bobby Scott serve as only a placeholder, or if McAullife appointed him, would he be expected to run?

He would have to run, absolutely.

I think if McAuliffe wanted a "placeholder" he'd choose someone very low-profile, like someone on his staff. If he chose Bobby Scott, Scott would run in the special election.

Chap Petersen or Tom Perriello would be he strongest Democrats.

Barbara Comstock, Bill Bolling, Tom Davis, or Jeannemarie Devolites Davis would be the strongest Republicans.

Don Beyer is the best option, but if not him then it should be Tom Perriello.

Scott. But more because of "political correctness" then qualification (a rather typical liberal backbencher). Beyer would be stronger politically, IMHO, but, again - correctness will interfere......

If Northam weren't running for Gov he'd be the perfect choice. On Beyer I was watching his ads and he was all about the carbon tax think that might hurt in Hampton Roads and Richmond burbs plus he's so old. Scott is 69 again thats pretty old to going in the Senate and he has never had a competitive race. The VA Dem bench is not really that impressive when you think about it.

His wife would be an option. She’s also a politician. It is not unusual that spouses get such an appointment, though that mostly happens after a senator dies.

McAuliffe wants this seat for himself.  He'll run in the special in 2017.  GOP could put up someone like Barbara Comstock.  Expect one of the most expensive, nastiest Senate races in history.

McAuliffe will go with a placeholder, someone close to him - a staffer more than likely.

Carlos Hopkins, the current Counselor to the Governor, is an African-American and McAuliffe confidant who could make a great interim.  '

McAuliffe vs. Comstock in 2017 would be a very good match up to watch.

McAuliffe is currently under FBI investigation he is not running for anything.
