State polling is really terrible this year isn't it? Mostly just university polls (Good Lord), firms that we know from experience to be careful with and questionable polls from sketchy local comms firms.

This is a good observation. The explanation for this is that, slowly but surely, many local newspapers and media outlets have ceased to commission state-level polls. The explanation for this is rather obvious: local newspapers and, I imagine, local broadcast outlets are facing fiscal issues.

At the same time, university-based polling appears to have become an institution. QU and Emerson have really expanded their polling operations, which are pretty awful. This lays the groundwork for a deluge of junk polls that do not align with campaign behavior and their revealed internals.

The interesting part is that it means we have less of an idea how what's actually going on than we used to. Entrail reading suddenly becomes more important...
