Without a hindsight, of course.

Incumbent Revercomb ran as a strong supporter of civil rights, which was a major issue, fundamentally distinguishing him from Byrd.

I voted Revercomb, but 1958 was a huge D wave election.  The economy had hit a bad spot and peak WV coal had passed.  Had I been around at the time who knows?

McDowell County actually cast more votes (in an off year election) than it has people now.

Still Byrd, albeit very reluctantly.

Without hindsight, keeping Ike's power to a minimum would be more important than civil rights.

Revercomb. I'm sure Byrd was better on a number of issues, but they mostly would have been prudential things, while Civil Rights was the fundamental moral question of postwar America.
