No. They did not kill a deputy. One of the shed-occupiers was killed in the final standoff with the authorities.

The fact that the only one hurt was one of the people on trial probably helped them with the sympathy factor, but the odds are that the deciding factor was just the rural Republicans on the jury supported them.

Well at least the Bundy brothers are still in federal custody and will also be tried for their actions in Nevada. Here's hoping the prosecution doesn't flub that one.

Speaking as a white Mormon.... These guys should have been found guilty. It doesn't make sense that they would be acquitted.

And also, while rural white Mormons tend to support these lunatics, those of us in suburbs and cities tend to think they're embarrassments to our faith.

The majority of the occupiers seem to have been confidential government informants who may have been responsible for supplying the firearms, and the prosecution refused to have these people identified and take the stand. Thus there were due process and entrapment concerns plus technical issues with the definitions of the crimes they were charged with.
