If Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton lost to President George H.W. Bush in 1992, who would have won the 1996 Democratic presidential primaries and why? Would they have won the presidency?

Probably either Al Gore or John Kerry.

Tim Wirth, David Dinkins, or Al Gore. I think a Dinkins/Shelby ticket would be very, very powerful.

Mario Cuomo didn't run in '92 because he thought Bush would be too strong. He'd be 66, though.

At anyrate I think after 16 years out of power the Democrats would try to go with a candidate capable of winning the heartland (and not coastal liberals like Dukakis, Brown or Cuomo). Possible nominees would be Al Gore, Sam Nunn, Dick Gephardt and Jay Rockefeller. I'm sure there would be other possible contenders. I'd say it would have been either Gore, Nunn or Gephardt and any of them would most likely beat the Republican nominee in the general election (after 16 years of GOP rule voters would be ready for a change, as long as the Democrat was moderate enough).
