Exactly why the extreme-right is to be feared.

An ultra-liberal America: gay marriage and marijuana

An ultra-conservative America: totalitarianism based on the moral views of it's leaders

You forgot no guns, rampant crime, socialism, communism, possibly even fascism.

Much of the left doesn't favor new national gun laws.
Much of the right doesn't favour totalitarianism.
Yeah, they're just freedom lovers with totalitarian leanings.
Tell me. What can liberalism do for me that conservatism or centrism (don't know if that's an actual word) cannot?

Save your job for one, but social liberalism is more about the minority than the majority.  None of my views have anything to do with me.  I am not gay, I'm white, male, well-off, going to college.  For all purposes, I should be a Republican.  But, I put aside myself for what I feel is right for others, and that's why I like liberals and like being one.  The only real liberal ideology that would help me personally is marijuana legalization.  Sick of having to be so discreet.
