President Gerald Ford/Senator James Buckley: 318 Electoral Votes (51%)
Governor Jimmy Carter/Senator Walter Mondale: 220 Electoral Votes (48%)

Assume all Senatorial election results are roughly the same: Dems keep the House majority and have 60-61 Senators. What does 1978 and 1980 look like?

Carter tries again, probably against Reagan, this time he definitely wins that match-up since he doesn't get the blame for the economy.

Reagan wins a highly contested GOP race against VP Buckley, Bob Dole and George Bush. Bush is subsequently picked for the VP slot. Democrats surprisingly nominate Governor of Florida Reubin Askew, who beats Carter, Mondale, Carey, Kennedy, Brown and Maddox for the nomination in a crowded field. California Governor Jerry Brown is chosen for VP. Although Ford handles foreign policy with more success than Carter in real life, the economic stagnation, the White House twelve years in GOP hands and Reagan seen as too far right, Askew defeats Reagan, whose career is ended.

✓ Governor Reubin Askew (D-FL)/Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA): 336 EVs.; 51.6%
Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Former CIA Director George Bush (R-TX): 202 EVs.; 47.0%

Scoop Jackson wins. He's experienced, he can win back the working-class voters who defected to the GOP, he is hawkish on foreign policy and can attack Ford on Iran, he prevents the likely GOP nominee Reagan from being able to take issues like strong national defense and law and order for himself, plus he can win the West Coast.
