I've only seen The Shining, but I want to see Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut soon.

Dr. Strangelove is probably the best movie ever made...EVER!

Yes better than Citizen Kane or Alfred Hitchcock, hell yes!

But yeah, from what I've seen, only A Clockwork Orange came off badly.

<brag>I've seen Dr Strangelove inside Stratcom.</brag> (like the actual command center, not just some random room in the building...though I've done that too)

and Dr.Strangelove gets my vote too.

I was kind of into him for awhile.  I've seen all the important movies by him, though I need to watch a Spartacas and Lolita again as I was doing other things for good chunks of both of them.  I could say the same about Barry Lyndon, but I don't want to Smiley.  The Killing is great and underrated.  His top 10 are some of the greatest things put to film....maybe not great for all 10, but very influential.  At worst he's one of the top 5 directors of the second half of the twentieth century (and that's a strong list).

I've only seen 2001, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket. I plan on watching more of them, Clockwork probably being next, but The Shining would probably be my favorite. Followed closely by Full Metal Jacket. I think I need to rewatch 2001 because I was like 12 when I saw it, it's not a science fiction movie 12 year olds would think is interesting.

Personally, Dr. Strangelove. In terms of "greatest" film objectively, probably 2001.

I like a lot of Kubrick's work, and I tend to agree with Crumpet's brief assessment. I saw 2001 when it first came out and it had significant impact on me as it did many at the time. 2001 gave space a beauty and yet routine nature that had been lacking in SciFi films before it. I saw Dr. Strangelove in college and it immediately became one of my favorite films. I've watched it many times since, and the film has only grown in my appreciation.

Back in the old days (the 70s), movie theaters weren't all concentrated in giant megaplexes, there were neighborhood theaters with only one or two screens and one was located within the range I was permitted to bicycle.  Mostly went to Disney movies and such fare, but one day in 2nd or 3rd grade (or between) I went to a matinee of 2001 (it had a G rating).  Sat in the front row with my giant pickle and soda and was very impressed by the opening--monkeys and the monolith, and then it kind of got dull after that.  Though when HAL started doing his thing I got into it again.  Still, it was just a tad way over my head.  Came to appreciate it later.  Voted Dr. Strangelove, though this and the Shining are close 2nds.
