Wow, I've got a cognitive dissonance after reading this thread "Who are your relatives and friends voting for?"

A lot of you have a close relatives voting for Trump. But this forum is all about Trump-supporter = Deplorable. So I what is your explanation for that?

EDIT:
if your closest relative is voting for Trump, how would you describe him or her?

My dad passed away last year, so luckily I didn't have to endure the possibility of him being a Trump supporter.

Hate to say it, but he's deplorable.

I've lost a lot of respect for him honestly.

My dad is voting for Trump because even though he dislikes him he still is a conservative who doesn't want leftwing policies and judges. He is one of the most charitable, honest, hardworking people I know, and is a respected member of my community. The idea that some atlas poster has moral superiority over him or thinks he is depolarable/racist/sexist is disgusting to me.

He would be Deplorable, yes. It is an unforgivable and disqualifying offence.

I can understand where you're coming from, and I probably wouldn't put your father in the basket of deplorables for voting for Trump, but my father is a different story.

My dad is the kind of guy who believes African Americans can be divided into two categories; they're either a "regular black person" or a "n."

Ah I see. I can't picture my dad saying anything like that. Are his racist sentiments the reason he supports Trump? Did he vote GOP before?

My dad was a Trump supporter from the day he rode down that escelator. He's one of those middle aged, working class white men who watches FOX News and listens to Herman Cain, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity every day. If there's a right-wing talk radio conspiracy theory or talking point, he has clung to and peddled it. Combine that with his tendency to idolize celebrities (before Trump it was exclusively Tim Tebow, but now it's Trump and Tebow). He has 2 Trump signs on his car, 2 in the front yard, 3 inside, 6 pins from visiting local Trump rallies twice, a magazine with Trump on the cover, and all of that within one section of the living room. An interesting and, to me, insightful development occurred recently when he bought a large flag of Trump's, took the American flag he flew off his good flag pole, put it upset down and crinkled up on an old pole while his Trump flag hangs on the good pole, and left it like that for several days until it was brought to his attention how that looks. His solution? Put the American flag inside crumbled up on the floor and continues to fly the Trump flag every day. Yet, I'm the anti-American smh.

He proclaims Trump as our last hope, that he doesn't lie (nor does FOX or Cain, Hannity, Limbaugh), and argues that global warming is a liberal lie, colleges are for leftwing indoctrination, universal healthcare will destroy America, and so on (I'm sure you could fill in the rest). Before Trump, he was an ardent supporter of Sarah Palin. He says that President Obama is a Socialist Kenyan Muslim who hates America, daily uses the N word in reference to the President (has even said his entire family needs to be shot and killed), chants "build that wall!" whenever they do on television, says that Democrats are the real racists after watching that Clinton's America movie "just look at those n****rs in BLM, they're the racists," refers to Sec Clinton as "that b****," and need I go on?

I know not all Trump supporters are that fanatical, but many are. Many Americans really are this bigoted and for them, deplorable is a kind word. When you have to hear that every single day and hear how liberals and Democrats are "dumb as f***" and "should be killed," your patience for Trump and his supporters is very limited. I see daily what a Trump presidency could unleash on our country. The thought of someone like my father being emboldened would scare the hell out of any thinking person.

He's never voted in his life. He's voting for Trump because "he will take care of our Mexican and Muslim problem."

I've thankfully never had to face a problem equivalent to this as my parents met each other at a Socialist Workers Party conference.

My stepdad is. He's a boomer trucker and he's no saint (definitely racist, though the oblivious sort, not the go out and punch PoC sort), but he's not deplorable either. There's a lot of middle ground.

I'm not a fan of how much negativity there is here re: Trump supporters. We're supposed to go high and remember love trumps hate.

He's racist but not deplorable? Is that supposed to be some sort of oxymoron?

And the problem is?
Heck, I'd listen to him on the radio if he had his own show.  I may not agree with every single word, but still...

Dad is a lifelong Republican, votes in every election. Just couldn't vote for Trump, he voted for Johnson instead.

My dad actually told me that he's going to vote for Hillary because he knows how much it means to me, so I'm proud to say that I do not have a deplorable father Smiley

Both my parents are lifelong straight-ticket Dems (as am I). So sorry for anyone who has to deal with Trumpist family members.

The only relative I have that I know is (likely) voting for Trump is my Grandfather. He's not all that enthusiastic about it though, so not placing him in the "deplorables" category.

My father is an enthusiastic Hilllary supporter.

My dad died in 2013, but he was the Bush-era variety of Republican and didn't see conspiracy theories everywhere, so I highly doubt he would've supported him (I feel like he probably would've supported Jeb or Kasich in the primary.)

Pretty sure the Republican side of my family will go for McMullin.
