Hawaii has always had interesting internal Democratic politics, and with Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard coming out so forcibly against Hillary Clinton in this year's primary season I could see some motivations for Clinton loyalists and their fundraisers to try to knock her out in 2018, thus denying the Democrats the possibility of another rising star.

How entrenched is Gabbard in her district?  Is she popular on the ground?  Who would be some possible Democratic challengers to her in 2018?

Tulsi had a 75% (!) approval rating in January.  That was before she endorsed Sanders, but I doubt it changed much.  She has 2 million cash on hand, which is the second largest warchest in Hawaii behind Brian Schatz, and she's going to win re-election this year in a landslide because even the state GOP has disavowed her opponent.  Not only does she have those built in advantages, but she's pretty popular among the progressive wing, and she's made a lot of friends by campaigning for other progressive House candidates.  If she was under attack, you can guarantee she would be able to raise a massive amount of money to defend her seat.  Clinton and her supporters would have to be really masochistic to want to take on that fight.

She's also really not that progressive if you really drill into some of her views, so she straddles that divide pretty effectively

Hopefully. No reason for such a right-wing Democrat to be representing that seat.

This. Gabbard balances out to a "moderate" in ways, as she has some pretty conservative views in regards to foreign policy and the military.

Gary Hooser, Ikaika Anderson, or Ed Case would all be good.

Ideally a tough primary lets a good Republican win the district.

They might, but it won't go anywhere. They don't really have that many progressive people who aren't running for something else.

Djou came close in the other district, but to no avail, the last 3 times. This one is 4 or so points to the left of HI-01, so no, this district is beyond safe D.

You have some incredibly idiotic comment from people who support Hillary but call Gabbard right wing seriously?

Honestly I would be calling for a primary challenge against Clinton if she were representing my district. That doesn't mean I don't support her as the nationwide Democratic nominee.

She has higher aspirations, regardless of what the party elite say, she's en route to bigger things.

Considering Hawaii was a very, very Sanders state and that Gabbard is very popular personally...no. I also think there's a decent chance Hirono will retire and Gabbard will be elected to the Senate, considering Hawaii likes to have Senators who'll stay in office forever.
