During the 2004 US presidential election, John Kerry won New Jersey with only 6 points ahead of George W. Bush (52,92 % for John Kerry vs 46,24 % for George W. Bush) Why George W. Bush managed to make such a strong performance in such a blue state like New Jersey?

9/11 probably.

In New York, for example, Bush managed to hit 40%, which is an excellent performance for a Republican. Even in brutal NYC, he got 24.10%, the highest for a Republican since 1988.

In addition, Bush enjoyed the benefits of the incumbency, he ran a drama-free campaign, the GOP base was united, and Kerry was a weak candidate.
