From these maps, it looks as if the Republicans still win the majority of counties nationwide. That doesn't seem like much of a realignment to me, merely a shifting (or tinkering) of today's voting patterns.

Granted, we still haven't seen most of the South and especially Appalachia, where the biggest shifts will happen.

So this means that the first GOP victory in this alignment will probably feature something that has never, ever happened before in American History: Vermont and Georgia voting together for a losing candidate

Can I ask why Broward County is a Republican county in this TL? It is relatively suburban, but isn't that affluent and has a plurality of non-white residents. Sorry if something like this has been covered; I'm not entirely sure I understand the dynamics of this realignment.

C U B A N S

Also, it is affluent in PPP. If the hispanics were less C U B A N or the county less wealthy it would be lean D rather than lean R.

As someone who lives in Broward, Cubans are not that prominent there, only 5% of the county is Cuban, the rest is mainly Central/South American and Puerto Rican. The wealthy point does stand though, I'll give you that.

Small error, but I'm keeping it. Remember, the hispanic and wealthy demographic is actually voting republican by this point, its just that there are relatively few places where that matters.

Wealthy, white, suburban. I might actually upgrade it to Safe R, now that you've reminded me of Palm Beach's existence.

Wealthy, white, and staunchly Democrat. I'm from there. The Republican base just isn't strong in PBC. In fact under these circumstances it might be even more Democratic.

Cuban-Americans are trending Democratic. The younger generation (me) votes about as Democratic as the rest of the Hispanic population. It's pretty much Gen Xer and Baby Boomer Cuban-Americans who are Republican, and even now Gen X Cuban-Americans are being turned off by Trump.

This is true now in the current alignment, but that's not the only thing to consider.

In this timeline, and any other that has a Democratic Realignment (tho with a different timeframe), the GOP basically bottoms out in the period from 2022 until 2028, starts rebuilding in 2030, and gets the Presidency in 2036. With WWCs defecting to the Dems, the GOP doesn't have a base to speak of, and so in their rebuilding they'll have to create a new base nearly from scratch. Who's going to be in that base? Groups that might have been receptive to the GOP in the past but are recently turned off by Trump and the evangelical base are a good place to start. Hence, Cuban-Americans as a GOP group.

I have to say that I don't really get the WWC swinging so strongly to the Dems in this timeline, considering the recent trend has been in the opposite direction.

They are a toss up/lean R demo, and only the most impoverished white areas/already dem white areas vote democratic. Black and Latino turnout increasing also helps cause the massive shift in rural areas, especially southern/southwestern ones.
