The voters in Maine have narrowly passed an instant runoff, preferential voting system similar to Australia, in which voters rank their preferences of candidates and then if no candidate has a majority of first preferences, the lowest ranking candidate is excluded and the second choice of their voters is added to the count etc, until a majority is reached. It will apply for US Senate, US House, state legislature and Governor elections.  This will be the first time it will be used in a partisan context, AFAIK, as right now its usually used just in non-partisan city elections.

It'll be interesting to see how it affects the Senate race, since Angus King should be running again, and Paul LePage has expressed interest in running against him.

If that happens it would be 1. King, 2. LePage, 3. Dem (if they ran) who would never put LePage as second so King wins with a greater margin.

IVR has one of my favorite electoral paradoxes, in which it is possible to lower the odds of victory for the candidate you want to win by voting for that candidate.

Considering Maine has third party candidates for statewide office more than other states, this was highly neccesary

LePage almost certainly would have won even without that third party candidate in 2014.

watch as it's repealed the first time "the winner loses".

Some places such as Pierce county WA and Burlington, VT have done that. However, Oakland kept it even though the guy leading by 10 points in their 2010 mayor election until the final round lost.

What I'm really interested in seeing is how the Libertarian and Green parties utilize this law. Finally the whole argument of "don't waste your vote" can be destroyed, curb-stomped, annihilated, put to bed, and the electorate and can fire away and vote their true heart's desire.  This being the US, somehow I wouldn't be surprised if the third parties still end up fumbling this opportunity, but it will be fun to see what happens.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Libertarians don't really emphasize the new system in their campaigning but I can see the Greens really getting behind it and mobilizing potential supporters to go Green 1, Dem 2 in places like Portland.

Depend on how the minor/independent voters split their preferences.

The benefit to Democrats from picking up otherwise spoiled votes from progressive third-parties will be offset by decreased turnout from people who do not understand a ballot with ordinal choice.

It's not THAT hard to understand. It's just "who do you prefer the most, 2nd place etc", doesn't require being addicted to politics.
