Thoughts? I'm kinda stuck between the two because while I think Howard Dean was integral to the success of Obama's 2008 campaign, I think Keith Ellison could provide the Democrats some fresh new blood that's desperately needed.

Ellison is not bad but I've heard that as a member of Congress, he would have conflicts of interest and wouldn't be able to devote all his time to rebuilding the party.

I would argue that did nothing to prohibit DWS from holding the DNC Chair, but she is an all-around horrible example.

Howard Dean was fantastic a decade back but not is a lobbyist for the healthcare industry & the last thing Dems need is another lobbyist running the party!

Big news BTW - Chuck Schumer (Who would have though) Senate Minority Leader & firebrand Elizabeth Warren endorses Ellison for DNC Chair (Warren only calls him "terrific" & raises concerns about Dean while Schumer has reportedly rumoured to informally verbally support).

Now Nancy Pelosi should throw her support & Ellison will go in as a very strong candidate!

Yes but that just proves my point. DWS faced all kinds of accusations of using DNC to fundraise for her own PAC and some of her Congressional votes saw her heavily criticized.

As long as Ellison quits congress I'd be happy with him- maybe O'Malley as a bridge between him and Dean.

Interesting internal politics from what I've read- Dean has the support from Party Chairs (who vote as a block) because of his 50 state strategy but I know he made a lot of enemies on the Hill (mainly from 2004)

Both would be good, but it's Ellison's time now.

I'm baffled at the hatred for Dean. He was a very competent chair and excellent candidate recruiter. He managed to capitalize on the hatred for the GOP and win... basically everything that Democrats wanted. Maybe he's not the right choice now, but he's not the wrong choice either, and he's not awful in any case.

I'd actually be fine with that, provided that Ilhan Omar replaces him.

Ilan Omar sounds awesome -has she expressed interest in running for Keith Ellison's seat if he became DNC chair?

Schumer's just trying to follow the direction of the wind. He knows his time is coming soon too if he doesn't reform himself as well. Better to join the future earlier rather than later.

Personally, I've been a supporter of Keith Ellison for a while now. He's one of the best Democrats we have and, while I think something like a Presidential run would (unfortunately) be too controversial, he could do enormously good work as head of the DNC.

Maybe he's not the right choice now, but he's not the wrong choice either, and he's not awful in any case.

A lot of Bernie supporters hate him because he's a 'lobbyist' who worked with Newt Gingrich (in the sense that he worked at a law firm that employs 7,000 people) and works with major drug companies.

Likewise he dared to vote for Hillary as a Super-Delegate; and a lot of them don't remember when he ran as the 'the democrat from the democratic wing of the party' in 2004.

I really like Dean; mainly because his 2004 campaign set a lot of pioneering work and because despite Bush's awfulness you don't take back the House, Senate and WH without doing something right as DNC chair.

I'd want Ellison as the DNC chair if the path of congressman/DNC chair continues. If it goes to the full-time dedicated route (like it should), then I'd want Tom Perez.

He sounds good on paper, but what exactly makes him a good fit for DNC chair?

He couldn't even win his senate bid this year.

I'm starting to think Ellison should run the D-Trip instead and coordinate with Dean Arnold DNC. Would position him better for a future role in the House

That's what we need.  A hapless blue dog from a Deep Trump state to alienate the coalition we have while not attracting any of the working class voters we've lost.

Dean is really the only good choice here.
