I don't really know enough about Ellison or Dean to know who's really the best choice. But the DNC chair is an administrative role, not someone who has to directly appeal to voters.

That's true, but they also need to earn back some credibility here. This election has been a stain on the DNC, and it seems Dean is not viewed so well anymore. The last thing the party should be doing is installing a lobbyist as the chair.

Great, encouraging sign for Jews, the single group that trended most Democratic in the 2016 election. It would be truly shameful if Ellison won this, turning the Democratic Party into the next UK Labour where anti-Jewish sentiments are actively being promoted by the leadership. Just what we need in these times of uncertainty. Of course, an anti-Jewish turn in the Democratic Party was to be expected given the developments on college campuses, but if Hillary Clinton had been elected, the process could at least have been slowed down.

Both are deplorable, but I'd prefer Bannon over Ellison and it's not even close.

Now I remember why I don't like you.

I think the most important thing is to have Democrats challenging Republicans in every race nationwide.  No race should go unopposed.  And if it means running conservative Democrats in conservative districts... well, we can hash that out when we win congress and assign committee seats and leadership.

Are conservative Democrats even that better at winning? No Democrat got elected Senator in a Trump state this year. Bayh was supposed to be some god of Indiana politics and went down. Two Trump states have pretty liberal senators: Brown and Baldwin. And just for fun, check out the ideology of the last 2 Democratic Senators from Idaho. They were two of the most liberal Senators ever.

What the heck has happened to this country... The polarization breaks my heart Sad

My one sole hope for the Trump presidency is that we see the return of Freudenthal-esque flukey Democratic wins in red territory.
How many blue states are red downballot? We have to win downballot in red states and we can't just do that by saying "me, too".

Fruedenthal was really good at triangulation. He supported gun rights as a proxy for criminal justice reform and supported grocery tax cuts to help the poor.

I'm constantly disappointed that freaking Wyoming had a Democratic governor in the 2000s and Utah didn't.

If Ellison has anything to do with the success of the DFL party in Minnesota, then he's probably a good choice.
The right will demonize him as a radical black muslim convert with questionable ties from his past.

But as a congressman he has brought DFL values to Washington and represents a majority NH white district.

I've said this a few times now:

My heart says Ellison.  He's a Minnesotan and I think he's a genuinely good person.

But my mind and gut say Howard Dean.  Tried and true.  Governor from a small, rural state.  Progressive/liberal.  Believes in including everyone without litmus tests as a big tent left wing party.  Is not in congress.

Logic dictates Howard Dean.  Heartstrings play an Ellison song.

What is your take on Dean's work as a lobbyist? If the best that Democratic Party can do in 2016 is someone who's spent the past several years advocating on behalf of pharmaceutical companies, I may as well shoot myself.

This.  Howie Dean is like Fredo in the Godfather 2:  He broke my heart.

He was like, one of my idols - a principled, unapologetic, populist 2004 candidate, then a ruthless, strategic, progressive DNC chair.

Then he got that weird haircut, nice suits, and (most critically) turned on the single payer plank he based his campaign on in 2004 in order to cash in.

Bottom Line:  I don't trust him.

LOLOLOL at this list of "anti-semitic Keith Ellison controversies:"

http://heavy.com/news/2016/11/keith-ellison-controversy-controversies-israel-nation-of-islam-louis-farrakhan-anti-semitic-comments-george-bush-hitler-american-islamic-relations-campaign-contributions/

Exactly zero of these are "anti-semitic."

Also LOLOL at Alan Dershowitz saying that the majority of the anti-semitism in the USA is on the left with Keith Ellison and Black Lives Matter.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2016/11/15/dershowitz_hard_left_is_very_anti-semitic_keith_ellison_black_lives_matter.html

What a joke.  Dershowitz is a brilliant lawyer; it's a shame he is one of those "anyone who isn't stridently anti-palestine is automatically a raging anti-semite" hacks.

I am more concerned who will be leading the DSCC, DCCC & DGA because they are the ones who are actually recruiting candidates for these races.

Van Hollen is apparently the favorite to head the DSCC, as he has experience as DCCC chair for two cycles ('08 and '10). No idea on the other two offices.

IDK what the difference is between 1) Ellison being damned by association by mentioning Farrakhan in college despite never actually saying anything anti-semitic and 2) Bannon being damned by association with Breitbart despite never actually saying anything anti semitic (at least according to anybody other than his ex-wife).

I guess #1 is okay to do because Ellison is anti-settlement expansion and #2 is not okay to do because Bannon is staunchly pro-hawkish current israeli govt?

Okay, I'll bite: what has Ellison ever said that can construed as "anti-Semitic"?

I'm wondering this too. I generally understand and respect David's perspective on Jewish issues, even when I disagree with it, but I'm scratching my head here.

So now being critical of political Zionism is equivalent to anti-Semitism? Don't the pro-Israel lapdogs have enough control over the Republican Party? Why must they also control our party as well? I believe Israel is practically an Apartheid state as well, which has unfairly taken and occupied land rightfully belonging to the Palestinians (Christian, Jewish, and Muslim) and has engaged in acts of terror and militarized oppression to maintain and expand their state at the expense of the natives. I suppose that makes me anti-Semitic as well...

that "occupying" charge loses all its power if you look how other states whose frontiers have been changed during the second world war have prospered and accepted their new "limitations".

besides the fact that israel would be waaaaay smaller if the arabs didn't try to destroy it several times....and got bloody noses from a far weaker enemey.
