I'm a little unclear on if Ellison can be effective DNC Chair. I think the whole "Muslim with potential Israel problem" right after we go full nationalist might not be the most effective way to win back the heartland. But maybe the DNC will surprise me and Ellison will focus on rebuilding the party instead of fog horning on the Sunday shows and effectively articulating the Democratic message.

I'm hoping this isn't myopia by the Left and that Ellison actually gets stuff done. I'm pleased he'll resign from Congress to be a full time Chair. Tentatively, rn, I'd back Tom Perez.

I am Peter Peckarsky y'all.

I've been there (maybe not that outwardly emotional but devastated none the less). Buttiwhatever is an incredible speaker and is topping my future Presidents list as of late.

Not sure how Indiana gets past the gay thing but maybe Senator/Governor 2022/2024?

Why do I think things are going to get ugly no matter who wins? Oh, right, maybe because that much is obvious.

The Chair of the Democratic Party isn't that important. The out party always looks messier and more disorganised than it really is. Both Ellison and Perez are strong progressives who have different factional loyalties rather than actual disagreements.

The next winning Democratic Presidential nominee will have 100x more impact on the direction of the Democratic Party.

To put this all in perspective, if you told anyone in 2013 that Keith Ellison would be roughly 5 votes away from being elected DNC Chair, they probably wouldn't believe you.

The party is clearly moving left, and that's still an accomplishment.

Good point.

Bernie's doing, btw.

FWIW, the Democratic elite and base are pretty aligned, far more than the Republicans on the elite/base axis, so this isn't a huge radical rejection or something.

My frustration isn't about Perez or the proxy war, it's that Ellison would have been really really good at the job

Looks like Ellison is co-chair but why do you say that? Reince Priebus should be the model for any chair btw.

Also first Latino DNC chair right?

Very. The differences between Perez and Ellison could be as I understand drawn on a needle head. Its organizational strength I wonder about more.

Also Bernie is the big winner here. 200 Democrats voted for his candidate and the eventual winner has a Labor background as a cabinet official. All around generally almost the best results for Bernie's grand game.

An olive branch means absolutely nothing. But please delude yourselves, we'll need the full eight years.

besides trolling...you are so afraid of - not my words - a(nother) socialist black muslim to crush your president?

They may get 8 years but the Democrats will probably own the generation beyond Trump/Pence. This election is a very small harbinger of that.

muh coalition of the emergents

Nothing about demographic changes. It's more the economic changes coming that kill the Republicans. Calm down.

What economic changes, the destruction of the American middle-class and rise of mass poverty? This clearly didn't help Democrats in 2016.

Not really the thread to have this discussion but your stated factors will certainly intensify in the coming years and that's why Bernie has become an integral force in the Democratic Party today. His candidate won 200 delegates and that's a highly decent showing. The winner is a strong populist progressive who laid out some of the most progressive elements of Barack Obama's administration.

The Democrats are a rising economically populist coalition (Bernie will propel them there) who are about 4-12 years from replacing the Reagan neoliberal coalition.

I hope you're right, but I have a hard time being so optimistic right now. Democrats seem bent on doubling down with becoming the party of the upper-middle-class.

Transitions from minority to majority political coalitions are never clean, have a lot of hurt feelings, and etc etc.

FWIW, the race between a black Muslim versus a Latino Catholic (in think) looks a lot like the America coming down the pike so that's something to think about too.
