So now being critical of political Zionism is equivalent to anti-Semitism? Don't the pro-Israel lapdogs have enough control over the Republican Party? Why must they also control our party as well? I believe Israel is practically an Apartheid state as well, which has unfairly taken and occupied land rightfully belonging to the Palestinians (Christian, Jewish, and Muslim) and has engaged in acts of terror and militarized oppression to maintain and expand their state at the expense of the natives. I suppose that makes me anti-Semitic as well...

There are no Jewish Palestinians. Those are called Israelis.

And yes, your post is grossly inaccurate and has shades of anti-semitism in it. Criticizing Israel isn't anti-semitism. Lying about it is.

Before the advent of the state of Israel, yes, there were Jews who lived in those lands alongside Muslims and Christians. No, they were not "Israelis." And no, my post is not grossly inaccurate, nor does it have any anti-Semitism. That you conflate generally accurate criticism of political Zionism with hatred of Jews shows that you're either ignorant or simply pushing an agenda.

Yes, the Jewish residents of the British holding of Mandatory Palestine became Israelis when Israel was created by UN decision. No "Jewish Palestinian" ever had land "occupied and taken from them", except by the Ottoman Empire, that prohibited Jews from owning land.

But I'm sure some guy who named himself after a group of brutal historical murderers knows more about my family's history on the land than I do.

historic relativism which cancels out decisions made 70 to 80 years ago would bring turmoil to this whole world.

It's very common in the actual regions in turmoil - Pakistan and India, North and South Korea, China and Taiwan, all of which have at least one party that has never conceded - but for some reason it's only popular as a hobby with edgy westerners when it comes to Israel and the rest of the British Mandate of Palestine.

The "they of all people" argument followed by a comparison of Israeli Jews to Nazi Germany. I think I just hit bingo.

Here's the real question: Will Ellison actually meaningfully change anything about the Democratic policy on Israel/Palestine? I doubt it. If its becoming more anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian, it was likely to do that even with Chuck Schumer as DNC Chair. If its not becoming more pro-Palestinian already, then its unlikely to do so with Ellison.

Besides, with Schumer watching, I doubt Ellison will be able to do anything too "anti-Israel".

Is it likely to change anything in the short term? Not really. The President controls foreign policy for the most part, Trump is pro-Israel, and the opposition will have much bigger concerns than trying to counter that.

Will it have a long-term toxic effect on the Dems' Israel policy? Absolutely, but that likely won't come into play until they control the government again.

With Obama's recent non-veto of an anti-Israel resolution, and the ADL, Alan Dershowitz and Haim Saban's statements, things are getting serious. Jews need reassurance that the Democrats are not going to abandon them.

Huh?

Am I reading too much into this, or are you subtly suggesting that Ellison shouldn't be DNC chair because he's Muslim?

I know that's probably not what you're saying, but I just got that impression from your reply.

It's his Nation of Islam connections that seem to be the problem. Personally, I don't care about it, but we need Jewish Americans (not just Bernie) on board.

Is J Street not enough?

Not really. They're an Astroturf organization designed to carry water for whatever left-wing policies Obama attempts to impose on Israel. I bet they cease to exist in any meaningful form after he's gone.

I'm a little late to this party I see.

Anyways, I now think that it is within the Democrats' best interests to vote for Ellison as the next chair.

I think many of you would like this article from Vox: Democrats would be smart to embrace Ellison

Democrats need to build on to the party and not lose core coalitions like Millennials and it sends a bold message to send a Black Muslim like Ellison to be a leader during Trump's tenure as president.

The country is already polarized. Dems, don't polarize your own party.

Anyways, are there any new news on Keith Ellison endorsements?
The problem is that Ellison is anti-Semite.

Yeah, keep that cynical use of identity politics going. Despite the fact Ellison wrote a paper on Farrakhan twenty years ago, let's dump an actual chance at rebuilding the Democratic Party and go with "safe choice" Tom "progressive who gets things done" Perez.

So your idea is to tell Jews that we shouldn't worry about anti-Semitism and that if we do then it's just "identity politics?"  Pathetic.

Kindly stop speaking for all Jews. Thank you.

He's not speaking for all Jews, he's speaking for all Jews concerned about the growing anti-semitism on the left.

If you don't count yourself among that number, you're free to back Ellison.

You are in a setting in which most of us care about opposing antisemitism but also don't believe that there is any credible evidence that Keith Ellison is an antisemite. There's an easy way to resolve this: Show us that Keith Ellison has done antisemitic things.

Instead, you are taking a claim that ought to be treated seriously and treating it as the equivalent of a playground taunt. It is  wrong, it disgusts me, and I know that you can do better than that.

Plenty of people have explained what we find anti-semitic about Ellison - the fact that he seems to believe Israel has some special power over US foreign policy, the fact that he had associations with Louis Farrakhan and sponsored a talk by a rabid anti-semite years ago, and the fact that he voted in favor of letting Israeli Jews be killed by Hamas rocket fire.

What continues to be asked is "Where's the evidence of anti-semitism that personally passes muster for me?", and I really can't help there.

Perez wanting the Democrat to win the Democratic primary is not a scandal.

The attempted socialist coup from within the party needs to be beaten down into the dirt for the good of America, the same way the populist right coup in the Republicans needed to be. We failed, sadly. Hopefully the Dems will not.

Go Perez! I may be a Republican (of sorts, in the Trump era), but I'd rather have two functioning parties in the US as opposed to one dominant party and one Sword of Damocles like in the UK.
