What was amazing was that Oregon's Secretary of State office (2nd in command) flipped to the Republicans this year for the first time the GOP has held an executive position in Oregon since 2002?

I added the map already. It is amazing Richardson is able to run so far ahead of Trump in this state.

The GOP also managed to get the State Senate margin back down to 17-13, it was 16-14 in 2010, then 17-13 in 2012, then 18-12 after 2014. So it is now just a smaller Democratic majority. There were no flips in the State House.

Perhaps Avakian took some controversial stands that were too far left even for enough Oregon liberals to cost him the election.

Exactly that. Avakian was known to be such "zealous SJW" that even many liberals in Oregon shunned him. Hi won primary with bare plurality, and even Richardson's conservatism wasn't enough for him (Avakian) to escape defeat. Any normal "pragmatic liberal" would (may be - narrowly, but - would) prevail in this race...
