Why would Huntsman run as an independent? Didn't he endorse Trump?

That's been the rumor so far. No indication of Huntsman running as a Republican.

Yeah, he's burned way too many bridges with the new GOP and right wing to feasibly win a State Convention or primary.

Huntsman seems like a Chuck Hagel type to me.  Not neocon but not a Ron Paul type.  I can live with that.

Would Huntsman run as a Blue Dog Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or independent?

In the Bloomberg article he says he will definitely run as a Republican.

Huntsman probably wouldn't serve for more than two terms at best.

"What do you call a Senator who's served in office for 18 years? You call him home."

--Orrin Hatch, 1976

In order to gain a good bit of clout for your state you almost have to serve for 18 years.

People need to get over Matheson. He's a lobbyist shill now (or that's how he'll be seen by many) and we've seen several times in the recent past that when you spin the revolving door of cash and politics and enter on the latter side, you lose.
