Waaaay more interesting than most Blue Dogs. Would have trouble getting through the primaries though. Thoughts?

He would have to pick a very progressive running mate.

Was elected in a time in which most Blue Dogs were getting ousted. Made staunchly Republican areas of Louisiana competitive. Edwards contested parishes that Democrats hadn't even dared to visit since Katrina.

Also, a damn fine speaker with a folksy sense of humor. He isn't boring like Manchin, or bloodthirsty like Webb. Watch one of his speeches sometime, he just has a way of working a crowd.

i don't know him very well, but he run when the republican image in LA was at the bottom of the bottom.....don't know how this changes in a few years.

(and even more devastating that brownback is so unpopular that KS has gone pro-dem this cycle and still reelected him in 2014)

He would have to moderate on some issues. Maybe not have a litmus test and campaign on simply a return to Obama's economic policies.

Or an expansion of them.

The Democrats will lose in 2020 (unless they run Gillibrand). Let's save our glorious savior for 2024

He's the Chris Christie of the Democratic Party. So how Chris Christie did in the Republican primary is a good indicator in how Edwards would do in 2020 Dem primary.

I don't, so no JBE vote from me.

Another problem with him running is that he's up for re-election in 2019. It will be tough for him to simultaneously appeal to the Louisiana general electorate and the national Democratic primary electorate.

He's going nowhere in the primary, he would have to win reelection in a deep red state aswell.

Only if Edwards does dodgy things with bridges.

Only if Trump ends up in a prostitute scandal. Then JBE can just reuse the "Prostitutes over Patriots" ad.

Why do you think Gillibrand is the best candidate?

She's supremely qualified and understands the needs of both rural and urban America and is a great representative of a highly intelligent woman and New Yorker. There may be 2 or 3 others on her level, but she's definitely one of the best public servants in the nation.

Obviously I prefer Schweitzer, but cmon it's the Democratic Party in the current year! Great views, wrong temperament.

Good luck convincing the kind of folks who included Hyde repeal in the platform that a pro-life candidate is a good idea. Personally I love the idea but the Democratic Party has strayed so far left on social issues...

Gillibrand's certainly more qualified than someone like Harris, but between the Philip Morris stuff and the Emma Sulkowicz BS, she seems rather unsavory.

I mean, how many people went into the 2016 primaries thinking that no one outside of a staunch evangelical, family values-oriented, soldier of social conservatism could win the GOP nomination?  And yet we got a relatively secular, socially moderate, arrogant billionaire from New York City who spent the campaign trashing prominent Republicans.

You never know, the Democratic electorate might care more about more abstract things (is he a "populist," is he going to shake up the system, will he kill DLC thought, etc.) by then and surprise everyone.

Anyway, unless Trump is very popular, I think JBE would smoke him.

Especially if a lot of progress has been made towards banning abortion, it might make sense for the Democrats to nominate someone who isn't toxic to pro-lifers.

But, if I'm saying it would be a good choice, it is not what they will want.
