According to the narrative, Bernie could have won over working class whites, which Hillary lost in places like Lackawana and Luzerne counties, PA; as well as places like Youngstown, OH. This seems plausible. But if this was true, he should have won these places in the primaries as well, no? Had he been able to win working class whites in the primaries, he may have been the nominee. Evidence is, they crossed over for Trump, as opposed to sticking with Bernie.

I think he would have if Trump hadn't run. They are also concerned about immigration as well as jobs, so Bernie was only half the package.

Wasn't Pennsylvania a closed primary?

OH was open to independents and Bernie couldn't come within 10 points.

I realize that. But if Bernie was going to perform strongly in places like NE PA why did he do miserably in similar places in OH?

There was a contested GOP primary at that time, it was closer then the DEMS, at least according to the polls. Kasichs margin confirms indys went more to vote against  Trump.

And everyone with little intelligence knew that counties with Heavy Dem votes went overwhelmingly to the GOP especially to Kasich. All Independents & a large share of Democrats went to Kasich to stop Trump - And Democrats voted that way to stop a Trump surge!

Closed primaries with a core Dem base where Voter Reg ended a while back. And he came on the back of a loss in NY where he performed below expectations. It really was over after NY if it wasn't already over!

There is no need to insult anybody. I didn't do any research into that particular primary, which is why I was asking others.

Democratic primaries in PA are machine dominated and low turnout; mostly it's old people voting and there's a big bias towards the designated party establishment candidate. This is desperate stuff.

All correct.  Bernie was popular in the college area, but there wasn't enough turnout to clinch the county.  Luzerne voted 50.5% Clinton - 45.6% Bernie.  Lackawanna was 55.2 vs 41.5; Hilary has more of a connection there, since her father was born and grew up in Scranton and was buried there.

Add to that the Dem machine and the nepotism in the area, anyone who is an outsider or underdog is going to have and extremely hard time making headway.  The fact that he was in the 40s range in both counties is really surprising, in a good way.
