http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/17/us/burqa-ban-bill-georgia-trnd/

State Representative Jason Spencer (R) introduced an amendment to a ban on KKK hoods, by extending it to the burqa while driving and for state identification, such as a driver's license.

If only Georgia had one of those icky state religious freedom bills this would be a straight up non starter.

One of the few things France gets right. I'm not bothered by this action.

You are thinking of an Individual Freedom of Religion. These rubes see it as a Collective Freedom to Religion. And maybe some yada yada and Liberty being a Duty than a negative entitlement.

How would this pass constitutional muster?  It's just purely hate fueled.

Its probably unconstitutional under church of the lukumi v city of hileah. I dont see sikh turbans mentioned as being also banned so there would seem to be discrimination amongst religions. It's hardly rational to say that one type of head covering interferes with determining identity while flat excluding a nearly identical type of head covering.

It seems libertarianism really just is a gateway drug to extreme ideologies, right or left, huh?

I can understand how Burqas wouldn't be allowed with regards to identification, only the eyes are visible in a burqa correct?

Shouldn't this just mean one can't wear the Burqa in their ID picture, and an officer can ask for it to be removed if he needs to identify someone?

If that's all this does then it is very reasonable, I just hope it doesn't ever extend to a blanket ban on wearing Burqas at all times, or hijabs.

No - the burka covers the entire face. Visibility is provided through a sort of mesh grill. I suspect you could count the number of people in the entire state of Georgia who wear one on the fingers of one hand.

Burkas are virtually nonexistent in the US because they're so distinctly Afghan and the sort of women who are that wedded to wearing one aren't going to be the type to immigrate to the US in the first place.

But people here use the term as shorthand for any kind of Islamic hijab dress.

A niqab would be more common in the US (but still super uncommon)

I cannot believe that the majority of women wearing Burqas are not coerced into doing so.

I do go back and forth on the law regarding this, but I don't believe that the wearing of a burqa is an uncoerced act in most cases.

A lot of women are coerced into having sex.

Do you want to make it illegal for women to have sex?

This is not the Middle East.  If you want to hide your face and close yourself off from society, go to Canada.  Is polygamy legal here?  No.  Its no different than banning a burqua (or a NIQUAB) - society has deemed it wrong, just like polygamy which also "harms" nobody technically.

If you support "religious freedom" laws and burqa bans, you're an asshole.

Strange comment given racist Quebecers keep trying to ban Islamic clothing.

In an ideal world I would oppose a Burqa ban, but sadly we don't live in a libertarian utopian paradise Tongue. In nearly all cases a Burqa is a symbol of either oppression or indoctrination. Then again, it's not really an relevent issue in America and I'm not going to die on this hill lol.

Pretty much. I like the "Unmasking Antifa Act" - i.e. if you're protesting, you can't have your face covered or subject to arrest.  Antifa, KKK, burqas, etc.  I could see for just an ID photo to take the burqa off, but I'm good with other places.  I mean in MN in winter everyone is wearing a full face covering at some point, but you don't wear them for your driver's license photo lol.

I'd like to ban this symbol of oppression and indoctrination.
