Wow. I guess rumors that Pelosi was fine are false. Also, has there ever been a time before when both parties' House leaders had the same last name?

A Ryan victory would be a good sign for the prospects of the House Dems working with Trump.

I'm fully supportive of this bid. Maybe Hoyer will decide to toss his weight into this as well.

I think Hoyer, if he does toss his weight, would back Ryan. Hoyer and Pelosi have never been too close IIRC. Hoyer would also help Ryan, as Pelosi has the advantage of being from California, which has a very large (and Dem majority) delegation.

Someone should challenge her. I'd rather he run for governor in 2018 though.

Good. It is time for some fresh, but experienced leadership. Hoyer and Clyburn should step aside as well.

Ryan sees the focus on the Rust Belt, sees his chance to get into the national picture.

If he loses (And I think he will), Ryan could run for Governor with "I took on Nancy Pelosi" as a great campaign message.

No evidence that he'll be more competent at the job.

Plus it's not like Republican ads will suddenly be like "oh crap, pelosi's not the Democrat leader so i guess they don't have a leader we can make controversial!". Ryan will get the same deluge of ads that Pelosi did.

This sounds like moving the deck chairs for the sake of moving the deck chairs. #ImWithHer

Here's the argument for keeping Pelosi from her hometown paper.

This is very dumb. I worked with an appropriations congressman in DC for two years. Tim Ryan left a very bad impression; he wasn't very good in approps and I doubt he'd be a great Minority Leader. The job of the minority leader is to keep the caucus united, make sure the right members are on the right committees, be the chief negotiator for her caucus with the other side and the White House, and to work with committee leaders to set the party's agenda in the House. It is not to win elections; that is the DNC's job. Nobody was asking if Paul Ryan was going to personally manage to preserve the majority.

Like her or not, Pelosi has been very VERY good at being the House Democratic leader. A change just for the sake of change would be pointless and would probably weaken the Democrat's position in the House even more.

This very much mirrors my thinking. Yes Pelosi has been in the job for too long, Yes she needs to get rid of people like Hoyer and Yes the dems did awfully this election. But changing for change sake will only get you so far

I'm strongly opposed in principle to having two House leaders with the same last name.

Pelosi's a great leader and there's no reason to remove her.  People don't vote for Congress members based on leadership, anyway.
