Not surprising. It looks like he wants to be a Senate lifer. He will likely win reelection in 2020 unless Rahm Emanuel is tired of being Chicago mayor and challenges him in a nasty primary battle. The only Republican that could beat Durbin in 2020 is Rauner or Kinginzer.

Thank god... B list candidate here we come!

Bustos or one of the Madigans would qualify as an A-lister. But of course, getting them to run would likely be difficult.

I didn't know he was even considering.

Anyway, don't get too excited, Republicans--there are other candidates, and Rauner should be beatable.

Yeah, if there's one thing Illinois lacks, its ambitious Democrats to throw their hat in the ring.

Still a Tossup for now. Rauner won't be as easy to beat as Kirk.

Yeah, thankfully Rauner hasn't had a stroke.

(With Durbin out, I will probably support Rauner for re-election)

Cheri Bustos is probably the best candidate, barring the mythical Obama 2018 campaign.

Cheri Bustos, Napoleon Harris, and Daniel Hynes are the only Democrats I can see myself supporting.

Michael Madigan would lose an an epic landslide.  He would never, ever run, but if he did it would be the greatest thing to happen to Bruce Rauner.  His daughter Lisa is better.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Harris. I could see myself endorsing him.

Mike Madigan (who everybody knows is the real governor of Illinois) wouldn't actually go for a promotion. He's powerful enough right where he is. Plus, he's not stupid - he knows, outside of his district, how much he's hated.

And as much as I'd love to see Lisa Madigan go for it, I've heard she won't run for higher office until her dad's out of the picture. She's safe at AG for as long as she wants it.

As for who would run, I'd think Cheri Bustos would be a good bet to run. A couple wealthy Democrats like Chris Kennedy and J.B. Pritzker have both been mentioned as possible challengers as well.

I was never that huge a fan of Durbin, so I guess this is a relief.

My personal favorite is Frerichs, who ran a strong campaign that I thought intially favored Tom Cross by quite bit - beyond him I like Bustos, Barack Obama is the impossible dream, Madigan is probably a paper tiger, I like Quinn but he can't win, and I suspect we can do better than Robin Kelly or Kwame Raoul.

I think ZOPP will run again.  I liked her in the primary.

Good, too old and too boring to beat Rauner. Too sad that Michelle Obama has ruled out to run for office.
