Well definitely not Alaska. I don't need days where the night never ends. So a toss up between Montana ad Maine

Easily Alaska, sheer size means that there's lots of ways to define "rural".

The Southeast bit sounds quite swell.

As everybody knows, my top priority is climate, as in hot and sunny. Meanwhile, my next priority is not living in the middle of nowhere, because I like cities. So...Yeah... Tongue

These all sound like amazing retirement areas. Alaska sounds the  most exciting, and in Montana I'd have to be situated close to the mountains or national parks.

I'm already somewhat familiar with rural Maine, so there.

Rural Montana, unless it was a particularly picturesque part of rural Alaska.

I adore both MT and ME, but Montana because of far better mountains for snowboarding and Glacier, my favorite National Park.

Well definitely not Alaska. I don't need days where the night never ends. So a toss up between Montana ad Maine

But that doesn't even happen in all of Alaska.

In any case, I'm going with rural Alaska, because that's where I'm from and I'd love to go back someday.

Rural Maine.

Finally my High School French would come in handy. And everyone knows New England Towns are the best form of government, so I wouldn't have to deal with any of that unincorporated nonsense.

Rural Alaska.  Considering most of Alaska is rural outside of Anchorage or living in town in Juneau or Fairbanks.  I'd love to live in SE Alaska.

I guess rural Montana, though all of them seem too cold for my taste.

You SE Alaska folks are boring.

If you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the Brooks Range or the North/Northeastern Coasts, you're sorely missing out.

Those can be visited.

But I value trees too much to go for anything past North Pole as a residence.

There's plenty of trees farther north still. It's not quite as dense, but it's still very pretty.

I'm not sure I could ever live in a truly rural area ... maybe I'll feel differently in retirement.  I'll go with Maine, as I read somewhere it has near identical typography to Door County, Wisconsin, which is one of my favorite places on Earth.

I prefer warm weather, so none of these are ideal, but I think I'd go for Maine because it has a coastline without perpetual wintertime darkness.
