Roby rather narrowly won her district over white and relatively conservative Democrat (who, BTW, still got substantially more votes here then Hillary, so - candidate's views are still important, not only party label). Even with all her conflict with conservative "faithful" over Trump probably exhausted - she is hardly a favorite..

Roby would've been the logical choice but it looks like she upset a lot of folks with the Trump un-endorsement (she's arguably the single politician in the nation whom it hurt the most). So I doubt it'll be her.
Yeah she only won by 10% this year after after a 67-32 victory in 2014.

Martha Roby, Mo Brooks, and Slade Blackwell are the only Republcians who could lose this(besides Moore and maybe Bentley, but neither of them are likely to run). Blackwell is the second most conservative Republican in the Alabama state legislature, behind only Bill Holtzclaw. Ed Henry is the third most conservative and recently tried to impeach Bentley.

There are no "far-left loonies" of any stripe in high office in the U.S.
LOL. There are plenty. Way too many.

How much influence would McConnell have here to try and get someone like Roby in instead?

Also: Luther Strange would be a pretty controversial pick for placeholder, considering that Strange is currently investigating Bentley's corruption.

If there is any Alabama Republican that Democrats could beat - it might be Strange.

Potential candidates:
Democrats: Jim Folsom, Jr., Artur Davis, Bobby Bright, and Richard Lindsey. Lindsey got a 61% ACU rating.
Republicans: Bradley Byrne, Mo Brooks, Martha Roby, Luther Strange, Kay Ivey, and Gary Palmer.
Independents: Randall Shedd, the most liberal Republican in the legislature and, if I understand correctly, the third most liberal member in the Alabama House.

I mean the only name I've heard that could even compete that isn't washed up is Walter Maddox.

Any chance that Walter Maddox could be the Democratic version of Scott Brown?

And Smoltchanov: there are no "far-left loonies" of any stripe in high office in the U.S.

Maxine Waters, Pramila Jayapal and Barbara Lee are all "far-left loonies" to ME. A mirror images of Alabama's Palmer and his like.... You are entitled to think differently, but i can name dozens (including some Senators)...

P.S. And 61% ACA rating is, frequently, not enough for candidate to be elected in Alabama. "Dangerous liberal")))

Artur Davis reregistered as a Democrat in 2015. Bobby Bright considered running as a Republican. He never changed his registration or went through with it.

Probably Byrne. I had no idea how damaged politically Roby is currently for un-endorsing Trump.

Bob Riley? Martha Roby? Bill Pryor?

Pryor will more than likely stay on the courts, and will probably be nominated to the Supreme Court. Roby would have been likely had she not un-endorsed Trump. Riley could hang around for another 4-10 years, but is honestly a little too old, especially considering how much of the South (except North Carolina) loves to have its Senators build up seniority. Robert Aderholt is my guess.

Look up pictures of Pryor, he's involved a magazine picture scandal. He might not get confirmed, especially if anti-Trump GOP senators vote no.

AG Luther Strange is running for the open seat. Regardless of who Bentley chooses.

Who's the most Liberal Democrat who could win in a Special Election?
The better question is, who is a Democrat that could win?

Richard Lindsey could win, but he's to the right of at least two Republican Senators.

Which two Republican senators are Lindsey to the right of, McCain and Collins?

So is Manchin. Maybe also Donnelly and Heitkamp. If he'd do right for the people of Alabama, he'd be acceptable.

Does Pryor have a chance of making the Senate if he doesn't get confirmed to the Supreme Court due to the explicit photo scandal?

Murkowski and Collins. Maybe even Heller, Flake, and Portman.
