The postal service? Eh, I dislike how the postal service is currently in this weird situation where they are technically privately run, but also propped up by the government and given a guaranteed monopoly by them. Of course, those concerns are a separate issue from this bill, but the current state of the postal service makes me a bit uneasy about supporting a program though them like this.

I don't know if that whole statment made any sense, but oh well. Tongue

Kay, well the question was about the post office, and this bill focuses less on that but adding postal banking as an extension onto the Post Office's duties. The Post Office is very solvent, and works very very well and admirably. I think we are continuing to see the Post Office expand and grow to reach rural communities, and be a responsible employer and a great place to work and employ middle-class workers.

I have the utmost faith that the post office can handle this task, as well, and even better as they continue to honorably handle our mail service.

Postal Banking would provide an economic outreach to MILLIONS of Americans, ensure our post office gets adequate funding, and protect a worker's paycheck to not be purloin by predatory multinational banks.

This is a pretty interesting idea.  I had  no idea that the post office actually did this for about 50 years.  It was championed by Grover Cleveland of all people and put in place by William Howard Taft.... and ended by LBJ.  Very strange and interesting history!

Anyway, now that I'm done with that nerdgasm... I think this is an interesting idea, and I definitely like the idea of expanding banking services to rural areas, which is probably something that would help people in my region quite a bit.  I'm less sure that it would actually work with the way the post office is going these days with UPS and fedex and all those competitors.  Will have to think it over a little more.

Okay. Putting this up for a final 48 hour vote. (Couldn't fit it in title)

Please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain.

Eh, I'm still not sure. Abstain for now, but that's subject to change.

AYE

This seems like a decent way to give people an alternative to our current, flawed loan system.

After thinking it over some, even though I see some positives to this bill, I just don't quite feel comfortable supporting it considering my concerns with the flawed structure of our current postal system.

I'm switching my vote to a reluctant NAY vote.

By a vote of 6-1, this passes and goes to the Senate.
