Trump looks to face a tough challenge. It is likely that both Clinton and Trump would be one-term presidents.

However, isn't that personal favorability? So not the same as job approval. For instance when Bill Clinton left office with a 39% favorability rating after the Lewinsky scandal and Mark Rich pardon scandal, but his job approval rating was in the mid to high sixties. So let's see if the American people think Trump does a good job as President.

Keep in mind that at least 45% of the country will disapprove of Trump no matter what he does.
And it could be higher or lower depending on where those Johnson voters were. The last few presidencies have shown little change in preceptions. Maybe his ceiling is 50% (enough to win another 21 EVs) . Maybe all he needs is 49% to get reelected. (He won FL/PA by one point though lost by a point). Maybe he will win 46% no matter what.

True. But visceral contempt usually subsides only after the politician is dead.

I'm guessing a lot of the recent increase is Republicans who didn't like him before but are not happy that he has won them an election.

Why the increase among Democrats, though?

We have to keep in mind that a lot of anti-Trump leftist rabble is to lazy to vote, or get a job.

Probably because many of them are in the last stage of grief: acceptance. They're just hoping he's a different character as a public official than a campaign candidate.
